Cash please or......

Yesterday I was invited to a birthday lunch. Venue; Restaurant Bad Osterfingen, just near Hallau. Outside and under the trees it was a really lovely day. All tables taken. Tip Top service. Food excellent.
When the bill was requested it came promptly and then came the surprise;
'sorry, we don't take credit cards' !!, 'We'll give you an Einzahlungsschein'. The bill in double was presented with the request to note down one's name and address, separated and put into an envelope together with the ES.

Reminded me of the time in Tessin where a week's hotel stay ended with me having to drive to Locarno Station to withdraw notes as the prop. would only take cash.

Funny old world.

Yea, you have to love the mountain top restaurants or other places in the middle of nowhere that are "cash only" with no option to pop over to a bank or ATM to get the required cash.

We were stranded somewhere once with only a sandwich to share and 4 hours left to hike. I have always taken at least 200 CHF since that day on hikes.

Nice they gave you an EZ. Something similar happened to me in the UK once. They just asked me to leave my business card, and I could send them a cheque in the post.

Re: Cash please or......

A little bit more than a decade ago, in my home country almost everyone paid with cash for everything. So if you intended to pay a higher bill with a credit card, the shop owners were often took a second look at you, because you were suspicious.
Growing up in this environment, when I went abroad always changed the whole amount of my budget into the foreign exchange as it was normal. When I first paid a larger amount for something in Switzerland, I got the same looks, as back in my home country the ones who wanted to pay with credit card.

As nowadays the use of credit cards is pretty common in Eastern Europe too, it is surprising to read that there are still places in Switzerland, which only take cash.

Re: Cash please or......

There are quite a few smaller restaurants on the Rigi that don't take credit cards.

I have left a business card in CH & asked them to send the bill to the company concerned, never a problem.
Migros did not accept bank cards 20 years ago, I doubt leaving a business card would have worked.

Re: Cash please or......

Years ago I wrote to a specialist bookshop enquiring whether they stocked something by a and b or similar, on topics x, y and z. I received, by return of post, a stack of more than half-a-dozen top quality books, and an Einzahlungsschein (pay-in slip) and a kind letter inviting me to browse through the books, and simply pay for those I wished to keep, and to return the rest by post. Lovely!
