Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

OP as an international student - I am surprised that he/she wouldn't get official mail from the university with all sanitary rules and measures explained. If it hasn't arrived yet, OP, contact the int. study department of your university here to provide you with updated government regulations. I would do it again right before you go, too, since the situation changes fast. It should really be your point of contact for the official information that you are entitled to.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

on the 20 min website there is a big article about the quarantine , long story short, the people who arrive from the 29 countries on the list of the bag are
required to contact the authorities of the canton they are live in.
At the airport nothing is happening , no checks, no temperature controls.
So there are jaywalkers around the country......

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

I had an interesting phone call with a really nice guy on the Swiss Covid Quarantine Help Line this morning. I explained our situation, namely: we left for the US before the quarantine mandate was issued and I asked how was I supposed to manage staying in the apartment with a dog (which I am bringing back to Zurich).

This guy said that he was certain allowances could be made for those with dogs and gave me another number to call and inquire.

I told him I thought it was fascinating that nightclubs and bars are open in Zurich but those coming from "risky" countries with stricter lockdowns must quarantine. He laughed and said the policy was not necessarily well thought out "off the record" and that they were hoping that some countries would be reassessed after a few weeks. (I doubt the US will be off the list anytime soon given the numbers )

He also said, "off the record", that they are understaffed at the moment and the numbers of those who must quarantine are larger than expected. There is no tracking at present. The government is relying on people to be honest and report to the Gemeinde/Canton office if they arrive from a country deemed "high risk". He expects many who chose not to report, will fall under the radar as they have no way of knowing who is coming to Zurich from a high risk country at present. I imagine this glitch will be taken care of in the next few weeks.

I plan to report to the Gemeinde and quarantine but will also take my dog out for short/brisk walks, wearing a mask and avoiding others at all costs - just like I did at the beginning of the lockdown.

I don't arrive back until mid August, so we shall see what unfolds...

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

I am a bored housewife, so I will be more than happy to do groceries, or help get other items for you. Just give me a list of items and wishlist. Also since you are in a shared accommodation, your wifi should be taken care of. You can check it off your list.

One thing you have to get is a Swiss SIM card, and phone plan. There are lots of companies here. Best to do your research. One of my favourite websites is www.comparis.ch. You can find best prices for insurance, products, cell phone plans, etc.

Feel free to pm me. My head is full of info, including useless ones, but heck, info is info. You have to wade through a whole whack of crap to get the gold nugget. Cheers!

Dogwalker.. that's the requirement in Canada for example. They're taking it seriously there.

Given the lack of enforcement, the quarantine fine will probably only be enforced if an infection is tracked back to a traveller that did not quarantine. It will then be in the papers.

I don't know for sure, but isn't the idea that OP quarantines away from other people, i.e. not in a shared flat? What's the point of quarantine if he happens to be positive but asymptomatic and then infects his new flatmates?
it sounds dumb but it's not like we're going to fund new zealand style quarantine hotels, so his quarantine will simply mean that he has contact with a very limited amount of people.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

I have a question. When I arrive to airport at Geneva, can I take public transport back but wear mask and avoid everyone? It will be quite pricey to take an Uber back.

Thank you all for providing the resources to order groceries and food. I just hope in the next 2-3 months that things get better but I doubt it (US).

I wonder if the embassy office could answer this question for you. Do you already have your visa? If not, maybe you can ask when picking up your passport.
