Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

As an incoming international student, I will start my study in Zurich since the end of August. I live in the US right now and found out that I have to go through a 10-day self-quarantine period once landed in Switzerland.

Given that I will not have any food or cooking utensils upon my arrival in maybe mid-August, I'm wondering if there's any suggestion on how to survive this period of time? Such as the apps/websites that I can use to order food/things to cook. (I do NOT have a Swiss phone number nor credit card. Only the US ones) I saw a web called Leshop, any comments on its service? But also open to any other web/app!

Many thanks in advance!

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

For restaurant food delivery, I use the website eat.ch, which has an option for English:

https://www.eat.ch/en/

You type in your zip code here in Switzerland, and then it shows the various restaurants that deliver in your area and their menu items to choose from, etc.

They accept credit cards as well as Paypal. So if you have a problem using your American credit card here, I think Paypal should still work okay for you through there. But you might want to give your credit card company a head's up that you'll be in Switzerland for a while, so they don't think your card was stolen and being used in a foreign country.

Also, bring lots of masks with you. They were just made mandatory on public transport here, and for all we know, they could be made mandatory in public in general by next month (hard to say). So if you take public transport on your way to the apartment or hotel, you'll need to wear a mask.

In the Zurich airport, there is a grocery store, so if you wear a mask after you land, you could grab some things from there to bring back to your hotel / apartment. But please wear a mask and social distance.

The two main grocery stores here -- Coop and Migros -- also offer home delivery, but because so many people are using that right now, there will probably be a bit of a wait for your delivery (longer than usual) after you place your order. As least that was the case a month or two ago, but maybe the wait times for delivery are more normal now. Both sites also offer English:

Coop Home Delivery:
https://www.coop.ch/en/?gclid=Cj0KCQ...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

Migros Home Delivery:
https://www.leshop.ch/en/supermarket...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

If you find yourself in a bind or have any other questions, etc, feel free to send me a private message through here. And good luck!

P.S. For cooking utensils, pans, etc. you can try to order those online. I think they are sold on those grocery stores' sites that I had listed above. But another good site for that kind of stuff is galaxus.ch, which has an option for English.

Building on the great suggestions already shared, I would suggest that you stop by the Migros at Zurich Airport. It is very well stocked and you can purchase almost everything you will need to survive your Quarantine period and beyond.

Good point. I was hesitant to suggest it (above), and probably should have listened to my intuition. But that is why I emphasized wearing a mask and social distancing if he/she does do that. But you're right -- best to not go there.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

leshop or coop 'shop at home' are the online stores for the two biggest grocery chains.

Where will you be staying on arrival ? I would contact your host/housemates/employer/school and ask them to provide advice and support, as they may have someone local who can help with delivering what you need.

Ikea do deliver and if you only make a small order, then it is possible to get it sent via regular post for only 10chf.

If you really get stuck, send me a PM and I can arrange an essential care package.

It does depend on where you are staying, and certainly the rules will probably have changed 100 times between now and mid-August.

What is your accommodation ?

leshop could have waiting times for up to two weeks for delivery, depending on market demand.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

Here's a thread that was opened to help people cope with Corona-induced needs. Unfortunately it's been closed. Mods, could you perhaps open it again, please?

Anyway, OP, you could write to the two kind people who've offered already on your thread, plus any of those people who've offered help on the big thread, once you know when you'll be arriving, exactly, and where you'll be staying, and the help services in post 1 of:

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

I do have some extra things in my kitchen that I could put together and send to wherever you're staying, either before or after you arrive. Things I could donate include plates, bowls, silverware, spatula, wooden spoon, cup, coffee/tea mug, frying and sauce pan (might have a couple minor scratches). Also dish soap, a sponge and a dish towel. And probably some other things that I can't seem to think of right now. If you're interested or comfortable with that, please send me a private message.

That doesn't matter, it only matters where they are living.

It matters if he of she has a US passport (or from the other banned countries) and is coming from the US. OP just said "international". Residence permits cannot be obtained until arrival.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

My family has been self-isolating since February due to chronic health conditions.

For deliveries, we are using:
https://www2.hm.com/fr_ch/index.html (clothing in a pinch: underwear, socks, PJs)
galaxus.ch (electronics and household items)
ikea.ch (furniture, cutlery, etc...)
coop.ch (better than leshop, but more expensive)
leshop.ch (good)

coop and leshop currently have a 2-day delivery time. It was 3 weeks back in March.

I suggest making sure you have a working paypal account, that should help you transfer money before you have an account here in small amounts to private people if someone can do a grocery run for you (but fees are high). I'm not 100% sure, but your US credit cards should work as long as you tell them you will be in Switzerland. If your credit card doesn't work, you can paypal someone money and ask them to place the grocery order for you.

So you already have a flat/place to go straight to from the airport to do your quarantine and it's unfurnished?

Since they have landed at the airport, it's a moot point, they will probably go 'home' by public transport afterwards.

Re: Survive the quarantine for newly arrived

Where are you planning to stay - a hotel, furnished apartment, got your own place lined up already?

The sort of cooking facilities you have access to will probably determine what you need to do about food. If you are in your own place it makes sense to buy some cooking pots for example, if you are stuck in a hotel then you will have to live off restaurant deliveries (expensive!!) or ready-meals and stuff that can be eaten raw.

If it's your own place: bring a Sharpie and a few sticky labels! You have to have your name on the mailbox before packages can be delivered to you; it's not enough to have [the equivalent of] "123 Main St. Apt. 2A", the name has to match too. Your landlord will probably want to have an engraved nameplate made [and will pass the cost on to you, but that's not relevant here], this is all quite customary and proper but can take some time. So that you can receive mail in the meantime (including your grocery or restaurant deliveries), stick a label on the mailbox with your name handwritten on it, and another label by the doorbell.
