Just out of curiosity, does anyone here smoke? I mean among those who posted (or thanked/groaned) here in support of smokers....
I am vehemently anti-smoker in public spaces. And I'm also a casual, social smoker (i.e. I smoke outside my band's practice room when we get together twice a week, during breaks). And every other blue moon I smore a cigarrette when I'm at work, as the lady I share an office has similar habits (rarely smokes). All in all, I think I smoke in average 3 or 4 cigs a week.

Anyhow, Nicotine isn't banned in children, only cigarettes. There's no legal ban on children using nicotine gum or patches.
Not sure if you mean that literally - if you do, that wouldn't even begin to make sense.

So far it's the sale (and other forms of distribution) of tobacco that's regulated, and restricted by age in many Cantons, not nicotine. Nicotine itself is a potent poison, it's federally regulated as pharmaceutical drug. Its sale is (was, if changed already) restricted to mg-per-dose amounts (20mg?). It's applications (gum, spray, patch, etc) are sold over the counter without prescription, but you need one to order online.

That's changing due to e-cigs, snus, etc, if it hasn't changed already. Same for the sale of nicotine in liquids (probably in its pure form as well).

I used to smoke in my early 20s but quitted after a few/couple of years and rarely tried a cigarette ever since. In my case I think it was mainly because of the people I used to hang out with not like a real addiction. OH smokes occasionally (and socially) like you do but not with me. He has some fine cigars he never gets my approval to smoke...
(there are exceptional occasions of course)

I'd never smoke around the house either. My wife detests the smell, both in the air and on me, so I only smoke if I won't be back home for a few hours. Otherwise she sends me straight to the shower and sprays me with Febreze.

Not in the grand scheme of things. I'm still waiting for one of the people on this forum to explain the "f**k you and your family" attitude where because something is allowed in law, or is not illegal, that trumps any unselfish action.
I feel like this explains the mask issue. Nobody was doing it until they absolutely had to. Same with loud neighbours sitting outside until exactly 10pm on a hot summer night when the kids have school start at 7:15 the next day.

No one came back with a reason. I guess it's lack of manners excused as cultural nonsense.

Smoking is dumb, I use to smoke lightly(for fun under other teenagers' influence) in my 18's, now when I look back, I realize how hard to keep on the right path your kids. Smoking doesn't have any good sides and nobody can prove the opposite.

Some adolescent females believe it makes them skinny. Some adolescent males believe it makes them look cool. Then they get hooked.

When I was much younger I had a girlfriend who smoked, we both did. One evening despite not having any food in the flat we decided to stay in. Then we discovered we had only 3 cigs between the two of us. So we went out to our local pusher (7-11) for our cancer sticks. I quit the next day.

If they're allowed to then what's the problem?

It does keep away the flies. Especially those blood sucking right in zhe middle of your back kind when one has just had a nice refreshing dip.
Thats not flies. Thats in your lungs-the micro blood vessels break from the effects of smoke and causes this pain. This is the later stage of the addiction

I guess if it's a one off or infrequently on a school night then of course it's not a problem but if it's almost every school night and kids are losing sleep then it's different.

The attitude which is prevalent here is the problem - "it's allowed so I'll do it", and "screw you and your family".

Still, I'm not Swiss so what would I know.

I have kids yet I wouldn't expect my neighbour's to alter their social life because of it.

This. Plus they wake us up at midnights with bass vibrations or drums and we bless them with some opera warm ups and piano études at siesta times..

Smoking, though, is a bit different. Can seep in through cracks and make people queezy.

Yes. It might come across as really stupid to you but this is an urban legend many teenagers/young females fall for...and of course they (think) they look more mature/composed and less vulnerable.

Re: Smoking cigars in the bathing area ( on the lake )

I don't remember ever thinking that smoking would make me skinny, but I do remember a girl trying to turn me on to smoking cigarettes in the 8th grade. And I remember holding one in my hand that wasn't lit, puffing on it and looking in the mirror and thinking it made me look cool. Actually, at the time, I think it was more that I thought it made me look elegant. Like the women you see in old movies, with their long cigarettes.

What I've noticed with smokers is that they often seem to be so use to their own smoke that they fail to realize how annoying it is to most people who do not smoke. I have a friend who often blows her smoke directly into people's faces when she's talking to them, and it's just truly mind-blowing that she either isn't aware that she's doing it or that she just doesn't care.

I use to smoke and was always very ashamed and self-conscious of it. I was the creepy person having a cigarette off in a dark corner somewhere, away from everyone else, so that I didn't have to force other people to endure it along with me.

This is an excellent book for anyone who is trying to quit or who is even just thinking about it... Alan Carr's "Easy Way to Stop Smoking."

https://www.amazon.com/Allen-Carrs-E...4924236&sr=8-1

While his method of cold turkey might not be the best way for everyone, what he does do in the book is explain the ways nicotine tricks people into thinking that they need it. So quitting is essentially a matter of just breaking that vicious nicotine-cycle and un-tricking your brain. I found it easier to quit when I realized that those damn cigarettes were really just manipulating me into thinking that I needed them. The author had smoked 3 packs per day ( ) for almost 30 years and talks about how much better he felt after quitting, etc. I found the book to be very empowering. Anyways, I just thought I'd mention it in case it helps anyone else.

Summer break started a week ago. So kids were going to school for a few weeks after the summer solstice.

I go to bed before 10pm because I want to get enough sleep to avoid wanting to kill my neighbours.

I don't think it's worth your while explaining.
What Full-circle and others seem to be saying is that if you did go to your neighbours and explain that your children were having trouble getting to sleep because of the noise, the correct response from them would be, "I don't care. I'm, allowed to make noise until 10pm. It's the law!".

We apologised to our neighbours in advance regarding our childrens' noise in the garden.

The answer was, we never hear them. They told us the people who lived there before us were a nightmare - the children screaming in the garden late in the evening, music playing, the parents screaming at the children.

Apparently Full Circle thinks that the latter is the correct way to behave irrespectively of whether your actions disturb others and tries to justify it by saying "It's the law!"
