How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

As Canton Geneva announced that as of Tuesday onwards, the wearing of a mask will become compulsory in every public indoor area, I can't but wonder how disciplined (or not!) the Genevans will be about it. When it was made compulsory on public transport, I would say about 1/5 person did not bother.

I have just returned from a very quiet, non touristic part of Northern Italy. Didn't see a single tourist. BUT even in the most godforsaken village, everyone there was wearing a mask, including on the street. They saw how badly Covid 19 could strike and the Italians for once seemed to be a lot more disciplined than the Swiss.

What is the situation like in your canton at the moment?

In Vaud they have only required masks in shops. But I would say the vast majority are complying. The youngsters 16-20 year olds are the biggest challenge. They think they are invulnerable and don’t give a shit about anyone but themselves.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

Got on the train at Wädenswil (ZH), about 80% of the riders were wearing masks. (The unmasked 20% were teens/20-somethings, daring anyone to say anything.)

When the train passed Samstagern, the last stop in ZH, suddenly a good number of up-until-then-compliant riders took off their masks.

Yep, we were now in SZ.

That pretty much sums up attitudes I see while out and about in Ausserschwyz/Einsiedeln.

From what I’ve seen, youngsters and elderlies share just the same challenges. I’ve seen many old people wearing a mask or even a simple scarf over the mouth but not the nose (useless), or in one case an old man wearing a bandanna like bank robbers in old western movies!

In buses and trains 95% were wearing masks I’d say.

The rules are the same everywhere.

Attitudes towards rules, though...

They certainly weren't yesterday when we were there, as it is only required in shops, bars and restaurants only when paying or going to the toilet (I asked).

If Geneva is my reference for Swiss discipline, I couldn't see the behaviour of folks here as representative of the nation.

Less than 1 in 3 residents of Geneva were born here, and only hold a Swiss passport.

Add a hundred thousand cross border workers, and 2.6m overnight stays from foreign visitors (in different times), then chances are that most people in Geneva are foreign.

I've noticed that most people using the public transport in Luzern have been compliant with the mask rule. There was maybe one or two people in the last week or so that I've seen without one on. The glares they got scared me even.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

I've been travelling a lot by train over the last few weeks and I must say the vast majority of people do wear their masks.
I'm very angry at those that hang them under their chin, or else leave their nose clear. Are they really stupid? I sympathize with the train personnel, if there happen to be any on board. Not much fun to be at the end of insults, particularly from the elderly who are the principle culprits.
A lot of the youngsters just don't bother.

In the Tribune de Genève today, they were reporting a manslaughter on one of the water buses pilots. A family of 4 (the 2 children were in fact young adults) turned up to one of the boats without masks and the pilot told them he could not have them on board, so one of the kids beat him up. I can't believe this is happening in Switzerland.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

having travelled a bit by both train and tram I must say that I find people in Zurich to adhere to the mask wearing rules quite well. Of course there are always a number of people that don't wear masks, but I would claim these are roughly about 10% in the trams and even less in the trains.

My experience is also that during late evenings, the tendency to skip the mask is more common, especially among younger people.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

From what I’ve seen in Neuchâtel people are adhering to it pretty well on public transport.
A mask is not mandatory anywhere else and whilst there are a few people wearing masks, most people aren’t.
I noticed that all the staff in Migros have been wearing masks since last Monday, that’s a new thing and I don’t know if it’s company policy or just the Migros here.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

I work in Baden and there was a nasty spat on the bus this morning.

There was an individual who refused to wear a mask and an elderly man was hurling all sorts of verbal abuse at him and threatening to call the police and also using racist slurs (the man without the maks was of colour). The man without the mask was mocking the elderly man and also calling him nasty names and so the situation was escalating.

Fortunately the man without the mask got off the bus before things turned ugly.

This bus route actually goes to the hospital and so there may be people at increased risk of infection travelling on it and so maybe that helped accentuate the situation.

In Basel-Stadt:
- public transport users are adhering to the masks for the most part (from what I've seen through the window outside-in; I maybe saw 3 people without one while paying attention)
- in grocery shops I see it very rarely (it's also not mandated here AFAIK)

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

In Bern, they are being very diligent about wearing them on public transport. (Even though I've seen plenty who aren't wearing them correctly.)

I am disappointed that they are only wearing them when they "have" to though. As soon as they leave the train, the masks are off even in the midst of the crowded station underground. When I am in the supermarket on a busy Saturday, maybe 1 percent are wearing masks, and they are usually only the elderly.

It's sad that the BAG has to mandate anything for people to do what is best for society.

Can you share this article please.

What I read on TDG a couple of days before was that a water bus pilot was manhandled, in a fairly minor arm grabbing and sweary episode. As a result, security staff will be reintroduced on the boats.

Of course assault is unacceptable, just not in the same league as manslaughter, or being beaten up.

Re: How is wearing the mask rule followed in your canton?

My commute is from North Zurich to the town centre and the compliance varies dramatically depending on the time of day. Furthermore, compliance is decreasing as time passes.

During the first week of mandatory masks, there was a roughly 97% compliance during the day time. Ok, deduct about 15% for being too stupid to wear them properly but at least there was an effort to wear them.

I didn't really travel in the evenings during the first two weeks, but these past two weeks, I observed a marked decline in compliance on journeys between 19.30 and 22.00 and a pretty much zero level of compliance on later journey on a Friday night.

During the daytime, there is an increase of ear dangling, chin-protecting and general utter idiocy. While the young are the chief offenders, there are plenty of folks who are old enough to know better doing it.

However, there is something that baffles me but actually goes on - I am that person who tells Karen with the mask on her chin to pull it up. Well, I look her way and mime "pull your mask up". The number of people who clearly forgot to pull it up and are not at all bothered by me telling them astounds me. How can you have so little self-awareness that you don't realise that you do not have your mask on in an area where you have to wear it?

Another thing that hacks me off is the people who get on the vehicle, wander around, ponder the meaning of the universe, decide that it would be more Feng Shui to sit somewhere else, sit down, check their phones, fill out a mortgage application and ONLY THEN put on their mask. Really? REALLY?!

I need to increase my stamina pronto so I can just always cycle to work because my extremely rule-obedient and risk-averse nature cannot handle these freaking idiots.

Kittster, I understand and agree.
Nevertheless I believe people lack self-awareness because they are not yet used to wearing a mask.
With time.. hopefully.. though we don’t have the luxury of time.
