to escape the heatwave in Geneva

In Geneva, Friday will reach 38 degree and Saturday 37, the heatwave will also affect other Swiss cities. In Lyon it will be 40 degree...

I am quite afraid of this temperature, especially because I don't have air conditional and would not be able to sleep well with heat. I checked hotels/Airbnb for Friday and Saturday in cool places but more than 90% are booked..

Where would you go for 2 nights to escape the heatwave?

Wow, this is wonderful.
We only get 35°C - I'll have to go to Geneva.

The mountains
This..
And not even too far.. I'm at just under 900m, up above Nyon..
We don't have the meteoSwiss heatwave warning, only 32 degrees forecast here.

Right now it's 21 degrees, all the windows open..My home office downstairs stays around that temperature all day.

Re: to escape the heatwave in Geneva

When I lived back in Switzerland, I would drive up to the top of a mountain pass and spend a hot day around the little lake picnicking and hiking. Up above ~1800m you should have somewhat tolerable temperatures.

Le Locle is a nice village, reachable by train and at 1000 m will not be too hot.

Re: to escape the heatwave in Geneva

The Marchairuz, or other elevated areas in the Jura, look like an option as you want to avoid moving south or east. Temperatures in St-George for instance, 1h from Geneva by train, are expected to stay below 30°C. Same for the following weekend, when temperatures may reach similar peaks.

Get a tent for 50fr in Migros sport, go camping in Jura. We've just been there, so much cooler than down in the valley.

Re: to escape the heatwave in Geneva

Got a cellar? Ours is at full summer temp of 18°C now (9° in winter).

We have an early morning system whereby opening the windows upstairs, leaving the cellar door open and all the cellar windows open, a gentle updraught is made cooling the house down to about 22°. As soon as it is near 22° outside all windows are closed and any window with sun has the blinds put down.

The cellar walls are below ground and floor keep the temperature low despite running outside air through it.

Currently it‘s 31° outside and 24.8° inside...

Any suggestions on places you can tent camp in the Jura? I thought that was usually banned except in staffed campgrounds..

Re: to escape the heatwave in Geneva

It's banned in the Jura as in the canton but on the Jura as in the mountain range there are places you can stay, eg the Noirmont not far from Saint Cergue, (accessible by train from Nyon), there are zones allowed within the Bassins commune which are quite wild... there's a pack of wolves roaming up there right now.

There’s a small campsite in Le Vaud too, no luxury but a little cooler..

I’ve never seen the wolves of Bassins but plenty of deer.. I can certainly hear the wolves from he zoo though :-)
