This area used to be super clean. Old Swiss ladies used to police the area with eagle eyes. Now they are all dead and all the remaining Swiss are moving out. I am the only wannabe Swiss left here
The owners of my building announced a big renovation, and 70% of the longtime residents choose to go. Then the renovation was postponed and they rented to new people for a reduced price until April 2021. These people talk to no one, don't even return the greetings when we meet. We used to have proper name tags, they all went for paper and duct tape to avoid paying 20 CHF. Since then the hallway and the garbage corner have often random trash and advertisements on the floor, broken sofas in the street, old chairs here and there, unauthorized bags in the bins.
Not saying I want a police state like the DDR, but it's quite sad to see how easy things can go south. God bless the old Swiss ladies carrying forward good traditions, as long as they're around.

You threw it away. So probably. It works for identity thieves, why not the officials? All I know is you gotta do it properly or else!
Nice one, if criminal can commit crimes, so can everyone else!

A whole recycling batch can become impossible to recycle, and has to be disposed of by other methods- because of a few lazy, ignorant people. It costs everyone, in so many ways- in your local taxation too.

Same for plastics.
BS
There are so many countries that recycling is not sorted, and gets sorted in distribution centers before they get sent off to specialised recycling facilities (glass, PET, paper, cardboard, etc.)
Of course separation can happen downstream, but in Switzerland people have been trained so there is no reason for the state and businesses to invest, they get free labour from us.

Additionally, while nobody argues against doing the best we can when recycling, it's never going to be 100%. I mean even wet paper/cardboard can be a detriment to the process but what do you expect to happen? Keep it dry until collection?

I can hardly believe this...even in the "worst" of Swiss city neighborhoods, that would come with heavy penalties. Where in the world do you live? Sorry for this, plenty of places that don't have these problems.
Believe my friend! I rather not say where I live. Recently 2 mattresses and 4-5 large furniture pieces where dumped at night. It stayed for many weeks as landlord was fed up of repeatedly paying to clean up. I stopped inviting friends as it looks embarassing!

Sounds like my neighbourhood!!! I am one of the few with proper name tag. Everyone else has hand made stickers. It looks horrible! The entrance to our flat is full of prams and kids bikes. I have problem entering the building many times! Btw none of the kids are pram age anymore! It drives me crazy everyday but I try to stay calm. This thread was a good opportunity for me to vent!

It will change when the communities will be short for jobs

I kinda like the fact that one spends a solid amount of time on garbage, daily. Makes one buy less, be conscious of waste and our personal responsibility. Genious when you have kids - they need to be aware of nature, plastic, recycling and upcycling, repairs and generally the fact that most people mostly don't buy what they need but what they want. It saves cash here to be garbage conscious and even cook more at home - so this tlc for yourself becomes tlc for the community.

I know it sounds drab but so it is.

It's in some gemeinde trash regulations (for example art. 11 comma 2 https://www.comano.ch/Rifiuti-691c9d00 in this case very explicit, less so in others) and sometimes also written on the sacks themselves. While it's forbidden I do not know if they dish out fines unless you expose a sack full of glass.

But I guess the OP put an electrical appliance or something like that in the sack and not a beer bottle.

It is not forbidden for those appointed by the municipality
Quote:
Art. 18 Attuazionee misure d’esecuzione
...
Art. 18 Implementation and enforcement measures
...
4 If waste is deposited or disposed of in an inappropriate or illegal manner or if there are other serious reasons, the waste packaging may be opened and inspected by those appointed by the municipality.

Re: How legal is to open garbage?

Without reading all the replies, so apologies if it's been mentioned, but it's not the agent who opened your rubbish but the refuse centre who identified you.

Yes, you'll have to pay up and yes it is legal!

Did the OP use illegal bag or official taxed bag? He probably used a normal non taxed bin bag so got what he deserved.

Re: How legal is to open garbage?

I have a paper name tag on my door bell for 13 years now. Okay, I exchanged it once when it was fading and it looks like I should do that again one of these days (yes, I just went and checked, LOL).
The landlord put an official one on my mailbox when I moved in - for free, nota bene - but not on my door (we each have separate entrances straight outside). My paper one never seemed to bother her or anybody else.

So what is this, the "I wanna be naturalized and listen how qualified I am for it?" thread?

PS. I do understand the complaints about the trash in the streets. So far I was lucky not to have this problem in my neighbourhood.

There are about 30 flats in my building. There are around 60 home made, hand written stickers of varying sizes all over the place. Some remade with half torn paper still permanently stuck, it makes the area look like a rubbish tip.

There was a reason the rule was strictly enforced and in the contract. I will probably never apply for Swiss citizenship but I respect their rules. It is about respecting your host country and the area you live in.

Thankfully, wanting to be naturalized is not a prereq for having an opinion or living through certain experience here.

Although there's a few on this forum who think otherwise and have basically said so in some of their posts.

I actually thought of removing it too. My neighbour never put one on. Lives blissfully incognito.

Re: How legal is to open garbage?

On the outside bells I don't understand why the custodian doesn't print name tags on a standard template, especially considering most people don't have a printer. It wouldn't cost anything or they could put 20 chf in nebekosten per year for the whole building. Owners don't care about these things as it doesn't really impact rent price.

Mine is scribled on a piece paper with a cartoon character on it. Can't ruin it with a title there now, can I.

Don't wanna jinx it but after all those years it still hangs there. Some good 3M tapes here.

Re: How legal is to open garbage?

Whenever we rent to someone we order the aluminium tag for the mailbox and door bell. Costs CHF 25 for the 2 and we just absorb it. Keeps everyone happy that way.

We've actually got a good stock of old tags now - I wonder if they're worth anything?
