I traveled back from the US on Monday, filled out the required forms online and on the plane.

Two men arrived at my door today (unmarked car, not in uniform), presented police badges, and asked for my passport and documents. Asked where my husband was (he's staying with family elsewhere) and reviewed the rules and penalty for not complying with quarantine (10k).

One of the gents was wearing a Florida t-shirt, which I thought was funny. He did not. They took my trash out for me, so that was nice.

Just an FYI

I'm glad to hear there are checks because there are none going on in Britain. Someone I know went to their holiday place in Spain for 2 weeks and came back, but they weren't that bothered about the self quarantine situation and there is nobody enforcing anything.

I know of two people who were checked up on in the UK.
I think it probably depends on where you live.

Yes, I also know someone who returned from a holiday in a country on The List, and two or three days' later the police arrived to check, and questioned everyone who lived in the household. Fortunately, by then, the traveller had had a test, and was negative, but is going through the quarantine, anyway, because the police reiterated that it was compulsory.

The people I know are returning to Spain in 2 weeks time and say they are not bothered about the rules as they're not being policed.

What really annoys me about the laxity of things is that at the start of the lockdown in Scotland my sister and brother were having to check up on our 97 year old aunt who lives alone and has no other family near her. Someone my brother thought was a friend reported them to the police and he was contacted and lectured about it. He asked the police if they were supposed to leave our very elderly aunt to her own devices and the police constable pretty much just said yes and this was a caution. For the record, they both met the UK Gov criteria on looking after her. Our aunt stopped eating with the worry of thinking her support system was going to be cut off and has gone down to about 4 and half stone.

Aunt recently fell out of bed and lay on the floor for 9 hours before she was found. She had to have surgery within 48 hours (hip fracture) and it looks like she'll now be transferred to a care home as she has pretty much given up. This whole pandemic situation is causing so much misery, she's like a second mum to me (mine died when I was 19) and I won't even be able to go home for the funeral if she dies.

I'm sorry to hear this, Cherub. It really is upsetting to have this happen to normal folk simply looking after others while members of the government openly flout the rules because they fancy a nice day out with no real consequences.

You wouldn't be able to open the door in Canada because of quarantine rules. My cousin had to do a 14-day one with his family, but because the neighbours got suspicious, the police was called. They had to shout from the backyard that they were in quarantine and the police had to call them on a cell phone to communicate. It was a ridiculous situation, but again, what's the point of quarantine if they're sending people to check up on them and pass documents back and forth.

How is a negative test useful. If someone was exposed, a test could be negative for up to 14 days in 99% of cases. If the traveller has a negative test in that time, they could still have virus in their body multiplying, just below the testing threshold.

In the mean time the Bavarians wanted to be specially strict (once again), tested tons of people at the border and ....................
............... lost the paperwork and can not inform 900 people who tested positive.

They did not lose the paperwork, but as it was all DONE on paperwork they are still working through the backlog.

I had also previously thought that it could take 2 weeks (hence the duration of the quarantine, after all) but the family members of this person, some of whom work in medical fields, say that with the current types of tests, 3 days after the last exposure is enough. I find the information confusing. Are the tests now really so much more sensitive than they previously were?

I suppose this could be true if everyone were using the same test everywhere?

I have a school friend now in California. Her children under 6 were tested with stool samples, along with nasal and throat swabs. My colleagues from work have no consistency in how their children were tested (throat and/or nasal swabs, doctor wants kids to wait or not wait until worse symptoms develop for at least X days).

I've little faith in the numbers due to the lack of consistencies.

Negative tests might not be useful, but positive ones are.

Where I am originally from new cases are at zero most days, but recently two people who flew in and were in self-quarantine tested positive. So now it has been made public that anyone who also flew on flight 123 from Timbuktu, in particular those sitting in rows XX-ZZ are at risk of having been exposed. I don't know if the airline and government have contact traced these people who might have been exposed, but for sure the people who have tested positive will be closely monitored and won't leave quarantine until they are no longer positive for the virus. And hopefully those who had risk of exposure are also being closely monitored and tested.
