I don't get the idea of mixed saunas, because it's obvious that most women and most men would like separated saunas, but I guess each country has it quirks.
They are usually part of spa complexes with saunas, steam rooms, rest rooms and various other water treatment rooms.

If you go with your partner, you can chat in the areas where you can talk between the different steam rooms and swim together in the pool areas.

It's a social thing.

In most individualist cultures, sauna is relax and zen time.

On others, it is socializing time, catch up. Until i came to Zurich, sauna was where i discussed personal improvement.

Now i just fart in silence

Plenty of swinger ones in CH too

Don't think mixed saunas equal whatever you think it equals. Well, at least not in Austrian spas. You'd probably be very disappointed and thrown out or even worse if you try something...people don't stare at each other so you'd be like a total creep if you do that.
The 'Swinger' ones in CH are not generally mixed. And (apparently) they're quite open about what goes on and try to inform any new customers about it if they don't look like they understand the idea.

"Obvious"? No, what's obvious is that in those places where Saunas are mixed most men and women do not want them to be separated, otherwise they would be.

Or the mixed saunas in Austria where both sexes go completely naked. I might have looked like a narrow-minded weirdo/peasant with my towel body wrap (a towel is allowed though) but I couldn't care less.
That's where I first got used to the idea. Although where I went towels were compulsory... to sit on at least. Now I'm just used to it.

They have mixed saunas here too where people go unclothed.
When there isn't a heatwave, I go once or twice a week. Most people are pretty discrete. Some people (both men and women) wrap their towels around themselves in the sauna, but most don't. Nobody cares. The principle is do what you feel comfortable with. Outside the saunas more people cover up a bit, but plenty don't.

They're currently redeveloping the sauna area at Aquabasilea, adding another single sex sauna with separate single sex showers. I think this might be an effort to attract younger customers who can be rather more uptight about such things.

Yeah, I did add "each country has its quirks". It may look like I'm criticising, but I'm not. It's just curious to me, that's all. I enjoy taking a sauna after a good swim so I had to compromise a bit.

Tourists regularly visit the sauna I go to. They tend to be the shy ones who cover themselves with towels.

I really don't understand the fascination with saunas (everyone I know goes crazs for them), but then I really don't like the feeling of any kind of humidity so I guess that's the root cause. Also, while I am not prudish, that doesn't mean I want to see other peoples usually-less-than-aesthetically-pleasing junk in my direct line of sight either. In summary, I can definitely live without saunsas.

It's definitely not a part of the integration process in Switzerland.

Yes, for me it's a relax and zen time and even if I go with my OH we don't talk in the sauna or other relatively crammed places. I think we might disturb the others and we defeat the goal of just relaxing after all. I do like the idea of going together everywhere though.

Some people feel euphoric and there's some research that it can be a treatment for depression/anxiety. There's a Dr. Charles Raison doing research into this with a sauna box, raising body temp to 38.5°C for 1 hour and documenting reductions in depressive scores. There's a selection bias of course, since many people wouldn't have the health for this.

Don't know why you're linking humidity to saunas. A sauna is a very low humidity place, typically 5% - 10%, rising a bit during an Aufguss.

To think there was a time that the nude stuff attracted the young (ish) and it was the old phobies who condemned them for it .

Before which point, I leave. Especially nowadays when the limit on the number of people in the sauna is ignored.

I am linking it because it felt very similar and made me feel similarly uncomfortable.

Finnish saunas are typically 5-10%, but other kinds can be higher. You can educate yourself a little more here https://www.globosurfer.com/sauna-temperature/

I can't remember the exact types I was in, but they were pretty humid. Either way, even if the humidity was low then I certainly wouldn't ike the heat either.

I was more bothered by the changing rooms in Gyms in CH, where Mrs Mop with head scarf would come in & clean the floor whilst men were naked.
The pay is only 15.00 Chufs an hour, but she told her concerned friends that it's all she can afford!

Oh my goodness, did I ever ask to be "enlightened" about these things? Sauna is sauna without any sexual connotation, if there are other....sorts of sauna that is simply not sauna anymore. And no, am not interested in any of these clubs or whatever, thank you very much.

As for the Finnish/Swedish sauna, you should ask the Finns/Swedes. It's a tradition they are very proud of, and as far as I know it's safe to assume that in every nordic country public saunas are separated based on genders. For me it was a surprise to see that in Austria they are not. That's all. I have to add that even if they are not separated, everyone minds their own business, without looking or even worse staring at someone else. People like me who are not used with this are allowed to wrap a towel around their body if that makes them more comfortable. So there's still some sort of flexibility as to welcome everybody.
