Holiday help....

Help. We have a week booked in Croatia at the beginning of September, but I think it is going to end up on the quarantine list soon.

Italy (who'd have thought back in April) has super low cases at the moment, so I'm thinking of changing plans to there. Any suggestions of a good place to go?

Requirements;

- Nice beach
- Accessible; near an airport so car hire not needed or drivable easily from Switzerland
- Not going to break the bank.

Thank you

Tuscany! Lovely in September, easily drivable, great food and cheap! Beaches not so great but they do have them. Rimini another option if you're looking for nice beaches.

Were you due to drive to Croatia? If so, you could always still go as no one will be able to prove you've been there when you return, just depends on how seriously you take the quarantine requirement.

Thanks. I was also looking at Isola d'Elba just off Tuscany which looks like it has nice beaches.

Flying, so unfortunately can't dodge the quarantine, airports have started passing on passengers details. We could ditch the flights and drive... but it's 14 hours

I went to Elba last year. The left side of the island is pretty inhospitable and you would not want to stay there.
Marino Di Campo seemed to have the best beach, but not much else going for it. Cavo was a nice (small) place with a reasonable beach. Naregno had a huge beach. Portoferraio has good beaches on the north.

I think their most famous beach is Sansone. I went there, was terrible. No parking, terrible path down to it, no facilities, over crowded, best avoided.
There are loads of little beaches everywhere though.

There is not much else to do apart from the beach. I won't be going back. Ferry is a faf as well.

If I were you, stay in Tuscany and then you can visit Lucca / Pisa etc, etc. The drive down in reality is closer to 9/10 hours than 7.

Re: Holiday help....

We went to Follonica, Italy about five years ago. It's in the Tuscany region and is on the Mediterranean coast. It was a 7-hour drive from Zurich.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Follonica

There were some nice resorts there (some very affordable and some rather pricey), and very nice beaches. Lots of palm trees, etc. And Florence is only a two-hour drive from there -- good for a little day trip. I'm not sure how close Follonica is to an airport, though.

Another suggestion would be Liguria. We've always travelled by car and had more flexibility in choosing a place but you have an airport in Genoa. I don't know anything about the current number of covid cases though.

Re: Holiday help....

You could look around Tropea which is a short train ride from Lamezia airport, or the beaches around Monopoli, Puglia, which is between Bari and Brindisi airports.

If you are going to fly somewhere why not ditch Italy and go to Malta?
Seems safe enough for the moment.

Will be in Tuscany at the same time, but inland. But both Liguria and Tuscany waters are lovely and warm at this time of year. Might return via Follonica, as never been there- on our way to Lake Orta. Buy you a drink if we bump into each other- I shall be the one not wearing an umbrella or The Times

Re: Holiday help....

Just re-checked the list, as we're going away next week, sailing in the Ionian. Thankfully Greece is still not on the list, and it doesn't seem to be increasing its infection rate so hopefully should stay off until we get back...

So, OP, lots of nice beaches in Greece, sound good?
