Masks in Basel....

... OH has just texted me to say a colleague of his says masks will be mandatory in the shops in BS from Monday. Such a drag in hot weather but what can you do? :(

They’ve been compulsory in Vaud for over a month now and it’s not so bad. Most shops have air-conditioning anyway.

I just saw an article about it in The Local a bit ago. I'll paste the text here in case it interests anyone who doesn't subscribe to The Local. At least the weather is supposed to start cooling off a bit, beginning Saturday (highs in the low to mid-20s).

Basel introduces compulsory mask requirement in shops from Monday
https://www.thelocal.ch/20200820/bas...ement-in-shops

Basel City has become the first German-speaking canton to introduce a compulsory mask requirement in shops and supermarkets.

Basel City on Thursday joined four French-speaking cantons - Geneva, Vaud, Jura and Neuchâtel - in requiring shoppers to wear masks.

In addition to shops and supermarkets, Basel City will also require masks on the grounds of secondary schools (including grammar schools, FMS and vocational schools).

On school grounds, masks will be required wherever distance cannot be kept - i.e. not in classrooms.

Swiss tabloid Blick reports that the requirement will be implemented from Monday, August 24th.

Neuchâtel introduces compulsory mask requirement

On Wednesday evening, Neuchâtel put in place a mask requirement for shops.

The rule comes into effect immediately and will remain in place until at least September 30th.

Neuchâtel joins Geneva, Vaud and Jura in requiring masks in shops and supermarkets.

On a federal level, masks have been required in public transport all across Switzerland since July 6th.

You can live free from infection?

Re: Masks in Basel....

I reserve judgement on that one, because the state of some of the masks I have seen when out and about makes me think perhaps it's not doing a lot of good. I've seen plenty of people with really tatty looking disposable ones that have obviously been reused a lot of times.

Maybe it would be better to stop people from bringing it back in via holidays? Is 2 weeks away in another country absolutely essential at the moment?

The mask rule comes into effect tomorrow in Neuchâtel, it didn’t come into effect immediately.

Thanks. I've wondered before how accurate their articles really are. (I never use to read The Local but then subscribed to it a few weeks ago because it's in English and mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut :msnblush:).

I certainly can’t see why these rules cannot be implemented immediately or at least the following day.

I keep getting emails with links to stories you can't read without having a subscriptions and you're right it's really poor. They leave really ancient stories on there as well.

I noticed that. Maybe I should cancel my subscription. Does anyone know of an alternative online Swiss news source that is in English that is more reliable? Mainly, I just want to keep up to date with news about the virus here and any new changes announced regarding requirements (e.g. masks, etc.).

OH sometimes picks up stories from the SwissInfo website. I used to find Basler Zeitung pretty good, then they started making most of the main stories subscription only.

Indeed.
Neuchâtel announced it on Wednesday evening to come into force on Friday morning, that gave people Thursday when the shops are open to procure masks if they did already have them.
It really shouldn’t take longer than that.

Swissinfo usually has all the major stories.
