When you see them coming, answer the door wearing nothing but cowboy boots and a leopard-skin thong.

Works like a charm.
Sounds like the setup of an 80s German adult movie

Since they can't come knocking atm, they're sending out letters in our area. Husband got one the other day.

My sister likes to invite them in and then debate them on points in the Bible!

Better yet, invite them in for coffee while you're cleaning the guns or loading shells. True story, we did it several times when I was a child because my parents shot competitively. It was always a laugh, for us anyway.

I mis-read this as "sending out letters in our aura". So when you went on to say that your husband got one the other day, my first thought was: "How did he (or you) know?"

I don't agree with the way Dawkins behaves sometimes, but I don't think logic and science should be equated with "crap."
Neither do I. It's just Dawkin's polemic doesn't really contain much of either. But, you know, the faithful cling to their bibles, despite the obvious failings.

He should have kept out of philosophy and stuck to evolutionary biology. He's good at that.

Well, I guess it's a matter of subjective interpretation. But personally, I think the biggest problem with Dawkins is the way he delivers his argument. Not in the argument itself. But it's been my experience that when an atheist or agnostic debates with a theist, they are often quickly accused of being "arrogant." In the case of Dawkins, though, I think it applies.

Nah. The argumentation is crap. E.g. He sets up a strawman "religion is like this", and then knocks it down.

Anyway, that's by the by. I love the Black Books video segment.

I heard that there are no Jehovah's Witnesses in Sicily.

Sicilians aren't keen about witnesses.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses

This thread reminded me of Julia Sweeney's hilarious stand-up performance in an early TED talk, about an encounter with missionaries (Mormons, in her case, not JW). Hilarious nonetheless (or because of it). Enjoy.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses

Thing that gets me is that the Jehovah's Witnesses have been very successful with Italians here, which means that speaking Italian will make you a target if they hear you speak the language.

A few years ago, one of my neighbours overheard me speaking outside my apartment block in Italian. This neighbour, originally a Calabrian, seemed delighted to find another Italian speaker in the building and struck up a conversation.

It was all pleasant enough, until he reached into his rucksack and pulled out a copy of the Watchtower magazine. I've been around long enough to know what that publication is and knew I was trapped. Living in Winterthur, it's an occupational hazard - it seems to be the place for all the various cults and sects to set up shop in Switzerland and have come across some over the years, just never this close to home.

A further 20 minutes of discussion later and I finally escaped. After that, the campaign began and over the next six months I would receive repeated visits, to the point that I simply stopped answering the door.

If anyone has ever seen Das Boot, it was like that. Doorbell rings like a sonar ping. Anyone inside would stand perfectly still, hoping that no one would accidentally drop a coin and give away our presence.

Eventually, he gave up. I occasionally bump into him now, but it's thankfully limited to an exchange of pleasantries.

Two of them approached me on the street in Uster a year or so ago. They asked me if I would be willing to chat with them for a bit about religion and my views about god, etc. I think they had no idea what they were getting themselves into. So it's funny... They approached me thinking they were going to give me some kind of lesson regarding religion but the very opposite ended up happening. They got a lesson in science. But at least now they're both a bit more knowledgeable about quantum physics.
In the UK, I kept a pair on my doorstep for half an hour debating religion, science, history etc. eventually I had a gaggle at the bottom of my driveway waiting for them and they said they had to leave, I promised to get some reading material for them if they dropped back next week, not only did they never come back, but also, no other JW ever came to the house again. To be fair, the younger one was visibly waivering and was taking on board my points, I think I was black listed for converting him.

Re: Jehovah's Witnesses

Let's be fair. As a child during the war years I lived with an aunt who was a very convinced JW. In addition I had an aunt and an uncle who were just as convinced.
I think I learnt to read so young as 'The Watchtower' and 'Awake' were as much my companions as 'The Dandy' and 'The Beano' .
These people were caring, loving persons who simply had a belief and fought for it. They were often out spreading the word while the sirens were going, intent upon getting people onto the right path. My respect for them has stayed all these years.
Maybe if there were more people who would lift their behinds to get something changed the world would be a better place.

Maybe you're right. I personally have a problem with anyone proselytizing any religion. We should ditch religion into a museum, where it belongs, and carry on with our lives and be decent not because of some imaginary deity, but because of the other humans around us.
