He bought a CUSTOM piece of furniture, even admits he cannot blame them. Do pay attention.
Dear Jim, I work in regulations, and I know for most countries you can purchase and item have it delivered and even try it, for whatever reason if you need to return it ( and our OP has a very legitimate reason) the law would be in his side - in other countries that is- he would be able to return it
I know the OP is blaming himself here, but I believe many when they move here have their brain washed that its ok not to have any rights and be screwed....anyway, in this case a customer bought something that was not advertised clearly with proper measures, he took a risk, and he said he is willing to pay for the risk, but as the order is still 6 weeks ago, and not even delivered, I believe the risk he should be paying for is like simple charges for reversing the order...

I think even 30% is not acceptable... but hey... if he did as you said he would have paid for a whole price of the sofa

Its a good lesson though, here mistakes like these cost a lot as customers/consumer law is very weak.

I am not working in regulations but know that very often for custom made pieces different rules apply and you accept these if you order that particular thing. Have a look at the Terms and Conditions OP accepted when ordering.

And those clearly say that custom made pieces are excluded from the return policy..
If however as already pointed out, the item has not been produced yet one can of course have an opinion as to why they refuse to cancel the order...
