Targetting of certain features is very clear. I can stand at our border post and predict with 99% accuracy, who will be stopped or not. Same on trains- although they may also be looking for someone specific on the day, with a description- which may, or may not- fit the usual 'types'.
This is what my German and French friends that I used to meet up with in Basel would say. They'd cross on the tram and only certain people would get controlled. They made a game of who would get controlled and rarely was it a surprise. If you want to smuggle drugs, find a young swiss woman with a baby, she'll never get controlled.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

I am always surprised how people in this forum think it is normal to assume that people asking questions are good disguised police officers makes investigation.

For me it is the easiest scam in world.

"Hello Friend, i am secret police. Let me see your permit."

Scam guy to other scam guys: "Guys...target acquired"

PS; 2 years ago in Zurich North many BMWS owners found their car without Dashboard.

Joke: Maybe some disguised cops were asking personal information (car ownership and so on).

Did the guys you thought were police have backpacks?

Typically the ones on the trains have backpacks, that's how you can spot them.

The police checks seem to be not random. From my time in NE I remember most of the police checks on the train station seemed to be about drugs. There were mini-police raids with 8-10 officers blocking the stairs, others checking all the people that descended from a train and then looking for someone fitting an specific description. Then police asking someone to open their bags, some package got their interest and then people handcuffed was brought to the police car. It looked like there was an investigation behind and just catch the right person.

Was it a train from Basel, or other border crossing? If so it could be border control police or customs officers, they often ride the trains and do spot checks. I was even checked once by French customs officials in France on the way back from Strasbourg.
About 2yrs ago, I was on the No.50 bus from Basel Airport to Basel SBB when two plain clothes guys showed their badges(?) and went through the bus asking to see passports but they barely glanced at mine. They removed 4 guys from the bus and I later heard they were targeting people travelling on that bus to steal peoples' luggage. As I'd boarded with 3 large cases, they'd probably guessed I was more of a target than thief.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

I doubt they were secret service.

I had two people turn up at my door one time when I was, ahem "helping the police with their enquiries". One identified himself as a plain clothes officer. The other did not identify himself, but later did give me a number he could be reached on - to be stored in my phone as "friend".

I think he was secret service.

Did they smoke dope?

Real Swiss undercover cops do, after they put their guns on top of the fridge.

Nothing to worry about. Your neighbors are mostly undercover Swiss operatives anyway.

Pretty standard. I get stopped and searched almost monthly (commonly by the plain clothes police).

I've gotten almost good at spotting them too--a certain 'je ne sais quoi' of fit people standing/or walking around kinda confidently yet aimlessly. (Common around zuri-west).

The ones on the train are commonly younger guys--they commonly get excited when I tell them I don't have a residence permit or my Canadian Passport on me. Just a little teasing before I show them my CH ID card.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

I knew a guy bnack in my student days who tried to pull something like that off.

Just for a laugh, he flashed his student ID and said he was from the secret police and he wanted to see the guy's ID.

The guy took out a police ID and said, is this good enough?

Yeah, any police records you want to tell us about? Or are you considered a risk for the national security?

There has been a marked increase in P-26 and other deep state activities in Switzerland over the past few days. This was probably related. My friends brother's boss advises emptying bank accounts and withdrawing coins (no paper notes) in the following denomimations: 20 rappen, 1 Fr. And 2 Fr. Apparently something big will be revealed on Tuesday of this week. Keep your kids home on Tuesday.
Do you know if I have to refill Waffenlager P.655 Buechhoger or will Hans-Ueli and Köbi do this? I think it still has Deutsch Mark and French Franc in it, munition is from 1978, and we should properly deposit some Euros and some additional gold coins. If I am not mistaken they transferred the stuff from the Limmat Sprengchästli into the Buechhoger depot. It is the original stuff from 1942. Should be still good for a bang or two,

Ok, so I have never seen local secret police. I did see many totally not inconspicuous commie secret agents during the revolution way back. They talked to themselves .

awww -- you're too sweet (unless that was sarcastic :P ).

Truth is, I fit the general description of the typical foreign trouble maker. Quite a few times, if I speak American English, they lower their guard right away realizing I'm not the droid they're looking for.

Not to my knowledge - I hope I'm not a risk :P

I am not as skilled at picking out the female ones. Although I have seen them: Case in point: strange looking youthful couple (male&female 20-30s) just kinda hanging out at a cross roads path on WerdInsel, looking kinda lost--but not. After about 10 minutes, along comes guy on Roller, they quickly flash the badges, he tries to U-Turn and escape, they tackle him - arrest and call for backup.

Now physically - the female was very fit, but essentially useless in subduing the perpetrator. The guy looked like your typical Cross-fit fanatic. (Not super ripped but big and lean).
