Undercover police at SBB???

I was on a train today from Zürich-Aarau-Olten, and out of nowhere, after leaving Aarau, two scary guys approached the guy next to me. I don't speak German, but I understood that they showed the guy their IDs (apparently they were some kind of police) and it was some kind of control. The guy was nervous and showed them his residence permit and they asked him some questions. Then they just left. There were several other people on the train and they just ignored them, they just targeted that one guy. I found this really strange and had never seen it before. Any idea what it might have been?

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

OK,
What you saw is what you saw - without knowing which police, you won't really know particularly what they were looking for.

And yes, the plainclothes police can be pretty scary - I can tell you the Kantonpolizei where they bring people who are arrested are super-scary - you would absolutely not think they were cops if you met them down a dark alley...

Was it a football day today ? The worst I saw was full riot police at the HB managing the football hooligans, some of whom were armed with cut off poles from street signs

Anyway, right now, with virtually no tourists, it's probably a great time to identify people who are in Switzerland without residency papers, for good or bad intentions. Because they can't blend in so easily... and you don't risk offending some unsuspecting tourist...

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

They have both uniformed and plain clothes police/border guards on all trains coming from surrounding countries, and at times, other main train lines. Quite normal.

But of course, if you're a foreigner you'll be harassed. By the Secret Swiss Police. They're after You.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

There has been a marked increase in P-26 and other deep state activities in Switzerland over the past few days. This was probably related. My friends brother's boss advises emptying bank accounts and withdrawing coins (no paper notes) in the following denomimations: 20 rappen, 1 Fr. And 2 Fr. Apparently something big will be revealed on Tuesday of this week. Keep your kids home on Tuesday.

That's what I found strange. They targeted him specifically. And I look "more foreign" than him. I've been caught in police controls in trains/buses sometimes, but they were uniformed and checked at least most of us.
That's what I was trying to see if anyone here knew

Might be the CIA though*. Have you thought about it?

Or KGB. Or.

Generally, they are looking for certain people who fit a certain description, not 'foreigners'. :rolleyes"

Ha haa. I was joking, with my comment. ... Because someone seemed to imply that he was asked for his ID as though they somehow knew in advance that he was a foreigner.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

Targetting of certain features is very clear. I can stand at our border post and predict with 99% accuracy, who will be stopped or not. Same on trains- although they may also be looking for someone specific on the day, with a description- which may, or may not- fit the usual 'types'.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

The police checks seem to be not random. From my time in NE I remember most of the police checks on the train station seemed to be about drugs. There were mini-police raids with 8-10 officers blocking the stairs, others checking all the people that descended from a train and then looking for someone fitting an specific description. Then police asking someone to open their bags, some package got their interest and then people handcuffed was brought to the police car. It looked like there was an investigation behind and just catch the right person.

Re: Undercover police at SBB???

Was it a train from Basel, or other border crossing? If so it could be border control police or customs officers, they often ride the trains and do spot checks. I was even checked once by French customs officials in France on the way back from Strasbourg.
