Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

Thanks everyone for the help, very appreciated.

I just got back from 8 day travel. I was only able to visit the Bern canton due to the fact how many places there was to visit. There was so many and I was under prepared. I did visited jungfrau, lauternbern, thun and the city of Bern: museums, rose garden and the time clock to name a few.

I plan to visit Bern again because of the many places I still didn't get to see. I didn't know the country was this enjoyable, thanks!!

Glad you had a great time. It is amazing how varied such a small country can be, too.

We went to Schaffhausen by train from Basel Badischer Bahnhof last week, to the see the Rheinfallen. The town centre was lovely and the falls were stunning, I was amazed to get so close by boat. Really loved it and the walk all the way to the falls

With regards to Ticiono.
Stay in Ascona, it's arguably nicer than Lugano, but it has other advantages.
You can take the boat down to Cannobio, you can go to the Brisago Islands.
You can easily get to Locarno and take the famous scenic train to Domodossola and back.
Above Locarno is the panoramic Cardada, lots of walking.
As mentioned elsewhere, you can also easily bus up the Maggia valley, many highlights up there but Bosco Gurin and Foroglio being the main ones.
You can also go to San Carlo, gondola up to Robiei and walk there.
There is also the Val Verzasca, with the dam (something and nothing), the roman bridge and Sonogno.
There is tons of walking in the valley floors. I would not bother with walking along the hillsides (in either valley) as the paths are not that well maintained, and it's mostly wooded.
A bit futher away is Monte Tamaro ( https://www.montetamaro.ch/en/ )
Thank you very much for the detailed and so useful recommendation!
