Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

Ok, this post is real and thanks to everyone who answered my question about good places to take a friend around Lausanne.

This post is about Switzerland. After waiting for 9 months for Covid to subside I finally decided I should see Switzerland instead because all the foreign countries I wanted to visit are high-risk countries now.

The problem is I have never visited Switzerland before and I don't know where to start.

I have a total of 9 days, and I would like to see 3-4 places. Which means, I will go to the first place and stay at a hotel for 2-3 days and take the train and visit another one.

As far as I have read, people seem to like Interlaken, Jungfrau, Zermat, Lugano and Lucern.

I don't know if I will like these places because I usually don't like visiting old building and museums (if that's the main attraction). I am more into nature and quiet places.

I have social anxiety so I don't like crowded places.

Is there any place I can go that feels natural? e.g., grass, rivers, trees and ability to roam around without trespassing someone's property?

Head up to the Jura just above- perfect for your description.

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

From your description instead of Lugano which is the main city and crowded (at least in terms of cars) I would consider valleys in the northern part e.g. Bavona. Lots of hiking opportunities, waterfalls and old villages.
Interlaken is more of a base camp for exploring the area, among which is the jungfrau, I would suggest visiting the oeschinen see.

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

We just got back from Interlaken, where we took a boat to Brienz, then the little steam train up to Rothorn, the weather was good and it was brilliant!

From there the Jungfrau is not far away.

...but although there were few Americans and no Asian tourists, there seemed to be a constant supply of loud Swiss families shouting to each other from a 1m distance and noisy screaming kids everywhere.

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

From Lausanne, the city itself is nice. And Aigle is a short distance away, nice country side in the vineyards. Of course Montruex. And the castle, ok its a city and old building but still worth doing.

Gruyere is very nice, perhaps Moleson to see the cheese being made and enjoy the countryside around there.

Bike ride from geneva to Yvoire around the lake and boat to Nyon and cycle back into Geneva.

Gryon, Leysin, and Villars are really nice mountain resorts close to Lausanne

Creux du vin hike or bike (e-bike) ride from Noirague

Saas Fee is a nice mountain region close to Zermatt, which would be quieter than Zermatt. Zermatt is amazing but may still be busy with people.

Some excellent suggestions have already been given for this trip. On your next trip I would highly recommend Schwamendingen in Zurich, just sit on a bench with a cup of coffee and people watch

Is there nature in Switzerland?

Why not just google hiking in Swiss Alps? You could do the Summer Haute Route, Chamonix to Zermatt.

Go to Tessin. Maggiatal. Really great grass there!

Here a shameless plug - where I attempt to document some of my own hikes (with pics, notes etc.).
Maybe it inspires you landscape-location-wise.
Still (and forever) a work in progress.

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

With regards to Ticiono.
Stay in Ascona, it's arguably nicer than Lugano, but it has other advantages.
You can take the boat down to Cannobio, you can go to the Brisago Islands.
You can easily get to Locarno and take the famous scenic train to Domodossola and back.
Above Locarno is the panoramic Cardada, lots of walking.
As mentioned elsewhere, you can also easily bus up the Maggia valley, many highlights up there but Bosco Gurin and Foroglio being the main ones.
You can also go to San Carlo, gondola up to Robiei and walk there.
There is also the Val Verzasca, with the dam (something and nothing), the roman bridge and Sonogno.
There is tons of walking in the valley floors. I would not bother with walking along the hillsides (in either valley) as the paths are not that well maintained, and it's mostly wooded.
A bit futher away is Monte Tamaro ( https://www.montetamaro.ch/en/ )

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

With regards to Interlaken, it's a great base, primarily if you want to take the boats on the Thun or Brienzersee.
Otherwise try Lauterbrunnen, from there it's easy to take the gondola up and then walk to Murren, and about there. Dozens of spectacular walks.
You can also take the train to Wengen and on to Kleine Scheidegg. From there walk about, walk back to Wengen, walk to Grindelwald etc etc. It's all good.
Wengen and Murren also have plenty of accomodation if you want tranquility, but then it's more arduous to move anywhere else.
A nice walk is Interlaken > Iseltwald on the boat, then walk to Giessbach Falls (90 mins or so), walk up to the historic hotel for lunch, get the boat back.
Someone already mentioned the Rotthorn. You can go Interlaken > Beatenbucht by boat, funicular/gondola to the top of the Neiderhorn, do the ridge walk, and back. Go to Faulensee, walk to Spiez, castle, boat back.

One thing to watch is the timetables as now the summer one is over so you need to check the dates.
You just need a bit of luck with the weather.

I am travelling on Monday and I already have made decisions based on your comments.

Also, I am black so I don't really plan going to the Italian side. The last thing I want on my holiday is to meet racist people. That has been my experience with Italians so far.

Edit: I don't mean all btw, but from experience 9/10 have been racist towards me, family and friends.

Re: Taking a vacation to see Switzerland but I have no idea where to go

I have no idea if this works in Corona times...but if you go to Luzern, a day trip up Rigi works. From the boat station near the rail station take a boat to Vitznau. From there a short walk to the funicular which takes you to Rigi Kulm.
Our usual routine is we wend our way down to either Arth Goldau or Seebodenalp. The latter is a farmhouse where you can get beer / wine / cheese / bread before getting the cablecar to Küssnacht am Rigi which offers trains to Luzern etc.

We are planning a trip to Bellinzona but we have also been to Ascona which has great hikes. We stayed at the Art Hotel Ripossa and the hotel was great; it is family owned and they are musicians; jazz each night with great food. What more can ask for?

Looking at the weather forecast, you're probably best following CodPeace's Ticino suggestions.

Switzerland has a lot of beautiful places to visit. Vallorbe is another beautiful place to visit in addition to the list suggested by others

I don't normally correct typos on t'internet- but just in case the OP wants to Google, it is necessary. It is Creux-du-Van above Noiraigue- and yes, I recommend

Engadin Valley, especially lower engadin.

Val Poschiavo and Val Bregaglia are also great!
