Minimum wage Genève

Yesterday the people in Genève voted to have a 23 CHF / hour minimum wage in the canton.

Re: Minimum wage Genève

According to the article, the supporters of the initiative estimated that 30K people will be impacted by it.

It implies that 30K people earned less than 23 CHF/hour in hotels, restaurants, coiffures, cleaning, or retail business. 4K a month before taxes for living in Genève sounds challenging, but for frontalières this is literal gold.

Hope they apply this at the UN for interns too as that episode is quite scandalous.

Re: Minimum wage Genève

For frontaliers too

But it cuts both ways and is actually very complicated. One of the reasonse the Unions wanted a minimum wage, is so that employers cannot pay frontaliers less than locals. With the restauration and Hôtels/tourism, retail hugely impacted by Covid- this could push some into closure/bankruptcy. Frontaliers would be big losers, as they do not have the same unemployment rights. Complicated indeed.

True. Even in Zurich i had the idea of hairdressers and many more not earning 4000/month.

At least is the normal complains i hear in my travels to Porto.

Some do. Over the years, there've been threads asked by people wanting to live very modestly.

I'm pretty sure that it was intended as a joke as the "Can you live in Switzerland on [some outrageous sum of money]?" is one of the longest running memes on the site.

Is it possible to rise prices even more in Geneva? I don't think so. It will cause bankrupcies and not hiring outside of CH, there no longer will be a reason for that. Which I think is the ultimate motivation that made people vote for it.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. I got that. Yes. And it's a similarly recurring theme that some of exactly those asking the question really Do Not Get It, not even vaguely, how far removed said outrageous sums of money are, from life down where others eke out their existence, trying to cope at Fr. 23/hour.

Edit: and in many cases less than Fr. 23/hour.

Re: Minimum wage Genève

I think the main issue is the estimate that around 30K people were basically exploited everyday. One thing is earning 7K per month because you failed to negotiate 9K. A whole different thing is earning less than 23 per hour because employers profit from people's ignorance, to hell with useless talk about negotiation skills, something needed to be done and was done.

Do we know when this might become effective?

I know several people in Geneva making 3K (before taxes) who would be really really glad if this were to happen..

Apply what exactly?

First, UN jobs are not subject to the country (nor cantonal) laws.

Second, internships are not jobs.
