Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

My SBB halftax is expiring soon, and I'm considering not renewing it until the pandemic is completely over, since we don't foresee making many trips otherwise. I hope it'd be easy enough to sign back on, as they should have all our data stored.

What are you guys/ladies doing with your halftax?

I am lucky in that my employer pays for this. I would still buy it if it was my cost, mainly for the (not all, but) many Seilbahnen in the mountains.

No. I don’t go out to work anymore and all my family live within walking distance in the village.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

Just be careful. I didn’t renew mine, for the same reason. (Not really traveling)
I received many reminders, but just ignored them. In the end I received an invoice for the amount, plus a fine. It seems that you have to actively cancel it. There is also no helpline to call, so I had to send an email, which was responded to many days later with the instruction to contact ‘accounts payable’. By that time it was coming to the day that an additional fine would be due, so I just paid up. My work covers the cost of the card, so I am just in it for the fine.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I already stopped the auto renewal on mine so it won’t renew in December.
It’s not worth it for the amount if travel I’m doing at the moment.

When things change I’ll just bite the bullet and pay the 20chf extra to start it again.

Still makes sense for me.. I cancelled the GA and changed to Half card due to not commuting .. But the few days I will go to the office will pay for itself pretty quickly.

Yes, be warned!

I went down the same route for my OH when she didn't want to renew (for several reasons), she thinking "don't pay reminder, then no renewal". False, with auto-renewal on (by default when Swiss Card was introduced), and from frirst day of new period, she seemingly automatically entered a new annual contract, with arguably no legitimate reason to cancel (even after an appeal procedure which we entered, with reason/evidence given). (Unsigned) SBB letter rejected it (over 3 months later). We ended up paying... over half way through the new year after never using the HalfTax Card.

Sigh. Please be warned/head advice. Formally cancel early before the annual end date!

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I received the reminder in summer and simply followed the instructions regarding cancelling. No problems - it's so simple. Then followed a confirmation letter with the suggestion of keeping the card just in case of re-joining.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I did toy with the idea of letting it lapse but my long-term aim is to go into the office one day per week at some point. I have a discount of something like 20 on the card and my estimation of 40 * 4,40 as my "minimum" saving/usage of the card would pay for it.

So I did elect to not cancel the card a month ago (that's the notice period you need to get out otherwise you're stuck for another year).

My employee pays for the Half-Fare and it's due in December, so I think I'll renew it.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

Another idea is to first make sure you actively cancel it (see the warnings above) and then simply wait until you have your next larger trip planned and start it again then. You'll save the weeks or months that you aren't travelling.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I renewed because at the time we were returning to work in the office. Then that changed but oh well, it's not like it breaks the bank. I'm still using public transport for doctor/dentist and mountain railways so it's fine.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I renewed my GA in February, and got about three weeks' use out of it before switching to home office, where I have been ever since. Not the best decision I have ever made, and I won't be renewing it again until things get better !

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

The halftax cost is recovered very quickly, it's hard to not benefit from it in a year long timeframe. However for daily commuting I always take a local abo or GA, whichever is cheaper. Like many of you, I don't need it this year.

When going into the office becomes a more regular thing again, I might go for a combination of Streckenabo for work and Halbtax for private use. My workplace is one station outside of Luzern's Passepartout tariff area (slightly annoying), so the local abo isn't an option.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I still have several multi-ride tickets, so will likely renew my Halbtax until I run out of those... or they expire.

After that, I can't see any reason to have the Halbtax, or any other abo or advance ticket, as I rarely use public transportation. Even pre-COVID the only reason to take the train would be for appointments in Zürich city, the one place I'd rather not drive. But those are few and far between these days so I can't see any value in SBB abos, of any kind, anymore.

Re: Are you renewing your SBB halftax card this year?

I also just received the renewal letter. Need to decide in 10 days.

Last year it was very useful. I just don't see that scenario at the moment.

With automatic renewal the price is chf 165. If I were to purchase it at a later date it would be chf 185 as the loyalty discount of chf 20 is not applied.
