Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

I am about to purchase a motorcycle which will fit behind my car in our existing underground parking space. The space is indeed big enough to accommodate both vehicles at the same time and we could find no language in our rental contract preventing the space from being utilized in this way.

Question: Are there any standards or case law here in Switzerland that would prevent this? Any sage advice before I bring the motorcycle home?

Thanks...
- John

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

Lots of people do it, the only question is whether your particular garage forbids it.

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

Agree with Tom, have a look around your garage, does anyone store their other season tyres, boxes, etc in that area?

Complaints are more likely to come from a neighbour or the regie. But if everyone is doing it ...

Also what comes to mind are fire regulations and insurance (not your’s but the building’s)

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

Several people do store boxes, tires, etc behind their cars. It's a big garage with hundreds of spaces and I would estimate that 1 in 20 spaces has something stored behind the car. Based on this should I assume there is already precedent and proceed? Or should I ask for permission / set myself up for disappointment? In the alternative I can always pay 30chf/month for a moto space. Thoughts?

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

In this country it is always better to ask for forgiveness (and pay a fine) than to ask permission.

An underground parking is not intended to store things, including tyres. It is intended to park motor vehicles.

My OH didnt ask for permission when he started to park his motorbike behind his car. Its an outside space though.

I'm doing it too. Saves me 40 CHF per month.

As others said: don't ask anyone.

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

Done that for years. Nobody ever complained, as it IS a motor vehicle. I am pretty confident my rental agreement at the time included an "underground parking space", not "underground parking space for just 1 car and no other motor vehicle".

Just make sure that however you do it, it doesn’t impede on neighbouring spots. That is what is likely to result in a complaint. Take into account the possibility of damaging other vehicles when manoeuvring in and out. Paying f30 for a dedicated spot might reduce the hassle.

Re: Car and motorcycle simultaneously in same space?

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm going to use a motorcycle dolly (like this one here) so that maneuvering in/out will be as trouble-free as possible.

John, I've just re-read your thread title, and wondered whether that question should rather be in the "ask a scientist" thread.

+1 for this. There's kind of a "neutral zone" shared by three cars in our garage. The neutral zone exists because the parking spaces are a bit shorter due to the configuration of the garage. That zone is where the renters of the short spaces tend to store their tires.

One renter started parking a motorcycle in that zone. This meant that other renters had no space to store tires, and a fight ensued. The landlord sent letters to everyone reminding us the lease allows to park one vehicle and store one set of tires. Everything else is forbidden.

OP - Take a look around your garage. You say there are hundreds of cars. Are there any slots with more than one vehicle currently or would you be the first?

Good idea. But buying an Electra Glide isn't!*

*Personal biased opinion.

He he. Yeah. Agreed. Indeed it won't be such a big bike. In fact the Electra Glide is probably twice the size of the bike I'm planning to get. And if my measurements are correct it will fit very nicely inside of the parking space and with plenty of access room to the sides for the neighboring cars.
