Re: The Swiss-German Border Closure: Any Developments?

Not all borders are controlled, most small crossings into France that are still open have no Swiss exit/French entry control, only control when entering back into CH. In the last days it is visible controls are more and more relaxed. They start to wave you in as soon as you flash your permit. They have stopped giving fines or even asking the nature of your trip as there have been some lawsuits for the shopping fines or whatever

While in France they have much stricter rules on movement from the 5-6 times I've been into France near CH it is as busy if not busier than CH. Cop cars driving around checking nobody.

Blackbird.... I'd like to know which countries actually monitor self-isolation. Looking at Australia, for example, they require self-quarantine but is it actually monitored?

I know in the US, self-quarantine is not monitored.

Are they resident in Italy or Switzerland?

If Switzerland, of course they are free to roam, same as any other Swiss resident.

But you mentioned residents of Italy. "residents of Italy are freely roaming Switzerland"

Tom
Again you are wrong Two are not Swiss residents, they have business ties with a company here. They are of course allowed under "work-related reason". They are freely to come and go and they can cycle around Vierwaldstäteersee. I am resident of Switzerland, I can go with a car to Slovenia and back. Over Italy or over Austria. I don't have to test myself when I come back, but i do have to test myself there.

To stop the fight about semantics, I will tell you what I wanted to say in my first post, that the idea of "super middle Europe corona free zone" doesn't represent the actual state of things, because for two of those countries, Switzerland and Austria, I know that they are far from being closed. Other regions and countries are not closed, but they have different measures, which are more or less applied. In my opinion a common set of rules inside the Schengen zone would be very much appreciated, also in a dynamic way to close fast future centers of outbreak.

Of course it is monitored, they will accomodate you in a hotel and will punish you , when you try to sneak away.

The Swiss can prevent you leaving Switzerland, and the Germans can prevent you leaving Germany.

When you are in Switzerland, you are only Swiss, and in Germany, you are only German.

This happened to a dual Swiss-Italian friend the other day who wanted to go to Italy. Denied.

Tom
I hadn't heard about being stopped from leaving. How does that work, please?

I had understood that - even during Corona times - a Swiss national is always free to return to Switzerland, and a German national always free to return to Germany. Hence, at the border, a person with both those citizenships is free to walk across the border either way.

As far as I had thought, the Swiss-Austrian and the German-Austrian borders work like that, too, for their respective citizens.

People entering Germany are required to keep 2 weeks' quarantine.
People entering Switzerland are not.

As I had heard, the Italian border on the other hand, is closed altogether (from the perspective of Italy, and perhaps also from the perspective of Switzerland, I'm not clear on that). The only exceptions there are for those for whom their crossing (in either direction) is directly work-related.

Have I got this wrong?

Las Burg Covid19

Hi all,

Does anyone know if we can go to Weil am Rhein from Basel to pick up packages in LAS Burg? How it is the border with Germany now?
I know that at the beginning of April it was still restricted, but I heard nothing else since then.

Thanks. I merged some. The older one for Ticino and Italy I left alone since it hasn't been bumped in 2 months.

As a Swiss you're not only free to return, you're also free to leave anytime (guess that goes for foreigners with permits here as well). As mentioned by the Bundesrat in a press conference once: The problem will be, will the others let you in.

Because of celebrating mothersday, it is allowed to cross the border (you have to be back by midnight).

Does anyone know what the status is regarding France as of today? Who is allowed to cross into France and under which conditions?

On this topic, does anyone know when the Swiss border will reopen to visitors from the EU? Or when they will start processing new B permits again?

Do you know if that means that I can go "pick up" family? (I think I can drive to Italy, as am dual-resident... but the idea would be to pick mom up and bring her back here... she was in the process of moving before this mess started)
