Re: Border closure - Covid 19

Has anyone taken the train to France lately? I know there are some papers you need to have on you to prove that you have a valid reason to cross the border to France, I was wondering how and when they check that, e.g. when boarding a train.

I'd like to visit extended family in France, but right now it still seems rather impossible.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

Does anyone have any recent experience crossing into Italy?
Is there a form we need to fill out. I sent an email to Italian consulate
but have not received an answer. I read in The Local, that the Swiss were not happy about Italy opening the border on June 3, and I do not know if there will
be any issue. Thanks in advance

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

Forgot to update this thread... went to Italy last weekend to pickup a family member (family reunification).

Way out:
Exit from Switzerland was unchecked.
Entry to Italy I got asked questions (due to having both Swiss and Italian residency). They took some interest in my Swiss registered car, then said that as it's a lease, I'm allowed to drive it in Italy even as an Italian resident. If it wasn't a lease, I wouldn't be able to (not my understanding... but heyho).

Way back:
Exit from Italy was unmanned/unchecked.
Entry to Switzerland had a lone soldier who asked if we were carrying meat or commercial goods. Negative response to both, a cursory look into the boot and we were allowed on our way. No documents checked.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

I wonder when do they open them timewise? 0600 in the morning, I wonder will there be a queue of people waiting to get out? I'll be headed out of the country for a bit anyways off to see some family and friends.

We have flights booked from Zürich to the US on 9th July. Does anyone know if there has been anything announced about restrictions on travelling to the US up until that point in time?

Nobody knows what will happen one month from now, but USA-Canada border closure has been extended until end June, personally I think that chances for EU-USA travel are slim.
Keep in mind also that, even if US re-authorizes travel from Switzerland by that date, it does not necessarily mean that your airline will want to fly that flight - they still will cancel it if it will be in their interest

Well, there's now rioting and general civil unrest on top of COVID-19 so they are probably too busy with their internal issues to care about whether to allow people to come in from elsewhere.

...also there must be a risk that the Swiss will require you to self-isolate for a couple of weeks on your return. Something they really need to do for countries where the infection rate is significantly higher than here (assuming they let people in at all)

Everything is possible of course and stuff can change in a month, but realistically, so far in this crisis has been no precedent of not letting residents back in Switzerland. And while Switzerland can make your life hard at re-entry, there are also reasons to believe that it is unlikely: for example they don't like Italy opening so yearly (this Wednesday), but they already said that they will likely waive the quarantine requirements for Swiss who go on vacation to Italy, and also re-allow shopping-only journeys.

Overall I think it's just worth to wait and see if this trip is possible. If there is a need to make some decisions now based on the weather this trip will happen - I personally would bet against.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

I plan to travel end of July, also wondering. Are you a GC, or a passport holder? In that case, assuming the flight isn’t canceled, there is no doubt you can get in. Otherwise, just wait and see.
The real question is, given the rioting and pandemic, who knows how the infection rates will develop? Based on that, EU and CH might impose quarantine upon return.
I will be flying to SFO, and am dreading a 10 hrs flight with masks.

Absolutely no chance CH will impose quarantine. Enjoy your flight. PS. You can remove your mask just a little if you have to drink or eat

While I also agree that probability appears (as of today) to be low, convincing people that there are no chances is misleading and irresponsible.

Nobody knows what will happen in 1.5 months from now and how the epidemic will evolve, especially since the origin country of the travel here (US) is not doing that great.
To quote the federal immigration website:
The Swiss authorities have not imposed any quarantine measures on persons entering the country. Depending on how the pandemic develops, it is possible that health-related measures at the border may be introduced for persons entering or leaving the country.

As of now, the USA asks new arrivals to self-isolate for 14 days. I doubt it's carefully enforced but just so you know.

Based on what I've seen going out a little bit here, and hearing from friends who have traveled, I'd be dreading dealing with other people more than dealing with a mask.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

As a Swiss citizen, currently scheduled to drive to Italy on Saturday, then onward into France on Monday morning, it appears that this should be possible.

However, while France has indicated borders will open on 15th, it has not totally confirmed this for all EU/Schengen countries, or am I missing something?

Re: Driving from UK to Switzerland after 15th June

Trying to bring my parents from UK to Switzerland by car. Anyone know if its possible to transit through France to Switzerland after 15th June?

Seems impossible to find a straight answer from any of the websites.

They've been guarding it almost non stop the entry into Divonne for 1 week, before there was absolutely nobody, 2 days ago at 8am the white customs van and the 3 officers were already there

What did you give as a reason for the entry? Raison professionnelle seems to work fine for me, nothing else is asked
