Oh, foreigners can get away with that too.
Until they - or your wife - runs into someone who does understand them.
Never a problem for her, either she hits it off with them, or she doesn't care.

And if they want to argue, I pity them, they WILL lose (and BADLY)!

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

This just out from the US State Dept:

All intl travel now classified as level 4. Level 4 previously reserved for the likes of N. Korea, Sudan, Somolia, Afghanistan, etc.

https://travel.state.gov/content/tra...al-travel.html

The Department of State advises U.S. citizens to avoid all international travel due to the global impact of COVID-19. In countries where commercial departure options remain available, U.S. citizens who live in the United States should arrange for immediate return to the United States, unless they are prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period. U.S. citizens who live abroad should avoid all international travel. Many countries are experiencing COVID-19 outbreaks and implementing travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines, closing borders, and prohibiting non-citizens from entry with little advance notice. Airlines have cancelled many international flights and several cruise operators have suspended operations or cancelled trips. If you choose to travel internationally, your travel plans may be severely disrupted, and you may be forced to remain outside of the United States for an indefinite timeframe.

and from the CDC just now:

U.S. Students Abroad
The CDC recommends institutes of higher education (IHE) consider postponing or canceling upcoming student foreign exchange programs. In addition, CDC recommends IHE consider asking current program participants to return to their home country. Students abroad may face unpredictable circumstances, travel restrictions, and challenges in returning home or accessing health care while abroad.

Me thinks the US border is going to close soon...

These might be of use for those of you struggling with flight cancellations and other travel problems.

As usual check with your particular insurer of course as some have been changing their policy coverage on the fly.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

We have planned a move to the Netherlands in two weeks. As I understand it now, for the moving truck there should be no issues coming from and leaving again to the Netherlands.
We had planned to take our car and drive ourselves through Germany. What do you think? Is that -under current conditions- going to be allowed?

In the middle of a root treatment/crown with my French dentist. He just phoned to cancel the next 3 appointments and said they would get in touch when he is able to resume work with Swiss clients, as they won't be allowed over the border.

Got your permit to live in NL? If so, you're basically going home.
Sole transit through Switzerland, stopping only at gas-stations is allowed, you will have to find out whether it is the same in Germany. Or France and Belgium.

I have a dutch passport, wife has a work contract starting from 1st of May. So, going "home". However, we will be driving with still Swiss license plates.
Any idea where I would find the information whether transit through Germany is allowed. France and Belgium looks harder since there is also an Ausgangssperre.

Here for example.

You should be okay.

Do urgent reasons include running out of toilet paper?

Do you need to travel through France and Belgium or is it possible to reach your destination through germany (without a major detour) ?

I'm sure you are oh so very important. That why you need so much space for seven lines expessing how cool and special you are?
Anyways, we let people know there is a B-permit available soon. Should you survive December 31st, there is always Brexit.
How old are you?

No, through Germany would be quickest and these days also easiest. No closed borders between Germany and the Netherlands (yet).

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

Hi everyone. I drove back to the UK through France on Wednesday, going into France near Lausanne. I was let through because I had the travel certificates you need when outside in France (attestations - you can download them and print them at home) and I explained I was going straight to Calais to get the Eurotunnel to the UK. You must have the certificates if you want to get in.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

That's good to know. We're planning on driving back to UK on Wednesday from Basel. We're leaving for good so hoping that this is considered a sufficient reason to be travelling.

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

My advice: print off the "Attestation de déplacement dérogatoire". You need one for each person. I ticked the reason for going as the need to help a relative ("déplacements pour motif familial impérieux"), which is true. I also had a copy of the Eurotunnel booking. I said I wanted to enter France solely to drive directly to Calais and would only stop for petrol (again, true). Good luck!

Re: Border closure - Covid 19

Exactly what I was going to do. Got eurotunnel ticket, ToR1 form, form from gemiende saying we're leaving on 31 March.

I'm driving a rental van there and back, more worried about returning from UK as van will be empty, although I will have Swiss residence permit so can prove I'm just transiting from Calais to Basel.
