The future of wind farms in Switzerland

we have been promised/threatened with (depending on your pov) with lots of wind turbines for years, but the projects are being opposed vehemently and it seems the local authorities are wavering and nothing happening.

Do you have any planned for your region? And do you think Switzerland is suited to such energy producing methods and for what reasons. Where I live- the wind is either too strong or non-existent, for most of the time.

I reckon there is not enough continuously strong wind for turbines to be viable here en-masse.

For non-nuclear options, they should be exploring water-driven turbines.

Re: The future of wind farms in Switzerland

Totally pointless in Switzerland.
Those who think they will work here should spend some time on the UK coasts to see what wind is. One of the great charms of Switzerland is its general lack of wind...

There are few of them in Jura. I remember visiting Le Noirmont to do dog sled a few winters ago. I was enthralled by the anachronism of the sled being pulled by dogs just below those giant machines from the future pumping electrons through the electrical network. Of course, if I saw the turbines every day I may have a different opinion.

Due to the lack of space, I'm sure the turbines will make a lot of people unhappy. About the lack of wind, please remember the masts where these things are installed are over 100m above the terrain surface where the wind speed is different. So, they may work from the cost/gains perspective.

Nuclear is an option but I don't see in the short or medium term the political will to build more plants. I think keeping Liebstadt, Gösgen and Beznau operational is already a victory. Switzerland is close to have used all the available hydropower sources. Hydropower has been exploited to the point that water is pumped back into reservoirs with energy from nuclear power plants.

One good thing from wind turbines is how reversible they are. I guess the day they don't make sense anymore, the blades can be disposed and the masts is valuable recycle material. The only thing left is a concrete foundation that can be covered with earth and plant tress above it. As if never has been built there, ever.

Re: The future of wind farms in Switzerland

Our local towns are investing in wood chips and compost to provide energy and/or heating.

Switzerland's tourism would be hurt if they put up wind farms near touristic areas. They need to be out of the way, where only people off the beaten path would see.

Some hydroplants were designed with that in mind. Dinorwig in North Wales was designed to be able to provide power swiftly in times of need such as in the evening but with the pumps powered by an alternate source at non-peak times.

The overall gain being less conventional power stations overall and so less pollution.

I’d hate to see Switzerland carpet bombed by turbines like most of Germany has been.

Re: The future of wind farms in Switzerland

1000s are planned all over the tops of the VD and NE Jura - each small project presented separately- but when put together, represent a vast area that will destroy the character of the Crêtes du Jura forever. Including strong flashlights at the summit every 1 seconds to warn planes- so massive light pollution.

Every new building, every roof repair needs to get solar panels (and batteries). Simples.

Re: The future of wind farms in Switzerland

There is some potential in the the North, but too much opposition as not enough space. Turbines do not need crazy windspeeds to be effective.

Part of the answer to the energy / carbon problem of Switzerland is massive deployment of photovoltaic (essentially all roofs) combined with hydro storage (would require new / larger dams) and synthetic fuels generated by excess solar power.

Which would cover 20% of the necessary capacity, according to BFE:

https://www.bfe.admin.ch/bfe/en/home...ar-energy.html

Many roofs are not suitable for solar panels, but they should be part of the mix for new buildings I would agree.
