Why? I'm more inclined to think, that's it's cruel to not let them outside.
I absolutely agree.

I cannot imagine confining our cat indoors as she can get so despondent and frustrated if for any reason we need to keep her indoors for a longer period, and has so much pleasure in being let out.

Maybe you think that's because she's used to it and it's part of her routine, but even as a tiny kitten, long before we first let her out she was completely obsessed with what was happening outside.

She doesn't hunt much and she's too old and slow to catch much and she isn't much of a tree climber so nesting birds are pretty safe.

Personally I wouldn’t have a cat if it couldn’t go outside but I know lots of people disagree.
I don't disagree - it comes with its risks, my close friend is a vet tech and is constantly dealing with cats hit by cars, other accidents or poisonings. If I lived in a safe spot for them, I'd want them to climb trees and do cat things too.

Mine were born in a shelter in Spain and are skittish as heck/terrified of anything outside our four walls. I think it would be cruel to take a once outdoor cat and keep them full time indoors, but mine are as happy as can be & are currently curled up on my lap keeping me warm.

Thanks I also found another couple of research papers myself about cats and biodiversity - more related to wild cats. Cats are nocturnal creatures so when they hunt it's typically at nighttime. They also hunt for fun when they are not hungry it's part of their nature, Ive always liked that they are very close to their nature. I don't see anything out there that says the domestic cat is endemic or that their numbers here in Switzerland impact local & regional biodiversity balance, Ill ask our local vet about this over the holidays (assuming we are not locked down).

I see my two mentally divergent Siamese cats as livestock really. I keep telling them, come the war and we're all starving, they're fair game. So I'll opt for keeping my farm animals safe, and as fatty as their svelte and slender frames can manage.

Donít get me wrong, we (will) let our cats come and go during the day but from dusk to dawn they will be indoors.

When I say cats are not endemic, I mean they are not part of the local environment. They are predators but do not have their own predators, other than cars that is.

I've hardly left my 90 something square meters in 9 months and, so say I'm 25 times bigger than my cat, that gives him the assumed relative equivalent of 2250+ square meters in which to Lord himself.

If he could ever leave the sofa...

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Many of the critters that cats hunt are not endemic either but only survive as a bi-product of human activity. For example it is only because of human activity that the mouse or cockroach population is far larger than it would naturally be. Biodiversity is already seriously out off balance and that's not the fault of obese cats killing the odd cockroach.

If you live next to a nature reserve, the argument is different of course.

My 2 cats eat more than I do

I'd say 10CHF a day on food. They eat Kattovit Hypoallergenic wet food from Fressnapf. Cat litter costs around 30 a month.

So just on food and litter My guys cost me around 250-300

It's the medical bills My one Siamese has cost me over CHF10K, he's had spinal surgery, teeth removed, toe removed, in and out wit blown ass-gaskets, asthma (although we can share the same medication here)

Plus you should factor in cat hotels for when you go away.
Ok since nobody asked, whats an ass gasket ?

Donít know much about insects but mice, voles and birds are very much part of an agricultural environment.

Admittedly many of these are consumed by combine harvesters but they shouldnít be allowed outi after dark either!

I am trying to buy one, so I am researching about the cost.

I have three cats and they consume for about 250 CHF / Month, good quality food, not the cheapest but also not the most expensive either (Royal Canin etc.).

I buy in Germany! Swiss pet stores are horrible ripoff, take Zooplus for example, they have Swiss and German online stores, compare the prices... Swiss are about 30% more, even though they have no Swiss logistics (they ship from Germany to Switzerland) and German VAT for food is 7% (before Covid) while Swiss is 2.5%.

So I do online orders to German Packshop.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Vet's bills are likely to be more than food. even if nothing serious is wrong. our's occasionally needs treatment for various minor injuries and regular preventative treatments for parasites etc.

we buy the food in huge boxes online. much cheaper than in the supermarket. he gets through an insane amount of it and isn't overweight at all. We also need to keep the pool circulating and thawed even in winter because he refuses to drink from anywhere else (except toilets!).

I put in one of the cat flaps controlled by your phone so you can control his location if you want. he tends to spend a few hours outside at night and briefly goes out for his business after eating.

everyone should have a cat!

I have one cat and a crazy girlfriend. The cat probably also eats for 250 a month... I judge the cat to be a good investment in some nice (future) furry winter gloves.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Our cat dealer recommended Aldi for cat food. So that's 25rp per tin and that feeds the two kittens. I bought ten kilo bag of kitten dry food and another bulk buy of 9 kilos from another brand so I hope they eat all that before they get too old for it. Always worth scouring the internet for gutscheins, saved 30 CHF on a bulk order of cat litter.

Toys however are cheap. Paper bag, cardboard box, screwed up postit note are their favourites. My wife taught one of them to flush the loo, which was funny to begin with. Now if we can train them to use the loo, that will save us a fortune.

True. Treatments with Swiss vets are sometimes more expensive then for same treatment in humans.

It is very hard to find a good doc too, many will pile up charges that are much higher then the numbers agreed on before, sometimes they will present you with diagnosis that is insane and requires expensive treatments.

You absolutely *must* fix treatment scope and fix price offer before you go in written form (eMail).

Some of my personal experiences

Story 1
I brought my young kitty into Zurich Tierspital for castration. They performed the operation and also cut his eyelids, nasal cavities etc. "Because we think he had a problem there". I was presented with a huge bill and a cat that had ruined face. He still has scars and blood flows from his eyes from time to time 13 years later.

Story 2
I brought my kitty to Zurich Tierspital because he hat digestion issues, he was checked and docs came to me saying he probably has cancer and will die soon, they say I need to bring him to them so they will cut open his belly and "look closer inside" and that the kitty will need to go through a chemo process that will be horrible and cost me many thousands.

I went on internet and read, read, read, analyzed images and came to conclusion that this was not a cancer. Switched a diet instead. My kitty is alive and kicking 6 years later.

Story 3
I agreed on fixed set of tests + ultrasound for my cat with a quite famous animal hospital in canton SZ. When I came to hospital I told to the doc once again what we agreed on before my kitty was checked, at the moment of checkout I was given a bill 120 CHF higher then the price previously agreed on which I have disputed with printout of eMail. There was a lot of grumbling on their side and finally clinic agreed on the price. When I came home I had a eMail from clinic boss (whom I did not see or talked to) stating that I have threatened the staff and am not welcomed on their premises any longer. This was a blatant lie as I never even raised my voice, just placed printout of their eMail on the counter and asked them to honor the agreement.

Perhaps instead of "buying" a cat, you should adopt? You can save that money for the inevitable expense of having one.

We feed our two cats high protein premium food - back when I was broke in my young 20's, I fed my first cat what I could afford, and he passed away of stomach cancer at a young age. I am not sure if that is the reason why he got cancer, but I don't take my chances now. There is a lot of junk out there and best to buy from a good source.

With cat litter, toys and a mixture of wet and dry food, we spend around 150 CHF per month on our spoiled monkeys. They are worth every penny and I hope you experience the joy of having them in your life as much as we do.
I adopted moggies, and they cost over 400 CHF each. So no savings there. I know I could have got kittens for free, but I wanted a) adolescents or adults and b) to adopt.
