How much does a cat food cost per month?

I am trying to buy one, so I am researching about the cost.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

This is a 'how long is a piece of string' question. Costs will vary depending on your cat's size, age, physical condition, finicky-ness, and how tightly she has you wrapped around her paw.

So perhaps it's best if you look at what is available here to get an idea of what your monthly cost range might be.

Some of the larger pet food stores in Switzerland are Fressnapf, Qualipet, Meiko (higher end) and Zooplus (online only). Browse through each site to get an idea of the price ranges from basic brands to premium.

Each brand should have a daily feeding recommendation (and these are usually generous) from that you can calculate how much you might need, and then calculate the cost range..

https://shop.fressnapf.ch/de/home.htm

https://www.qualipet.ch/?gclid=EAIaI...E&gclsrc=aw.ds

https://www.meiko.ch

https://www.zooplus.ch

There are many other retailers, this is just a sample to give you an idea of range.

(As you are budgeting, don't forget about veterinary costs.)

---

Here's to your future furry friend...

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

If you are thinking of a cat, you really should think of getting two. Particularly if they will be indoor cats. Our current two are sisters from a litter of five. I’d be incapable of keeping them entertained and exercised the way they do each other.

In addition to those mentioned by melloncolie all the food stores sell pet foods, some with their own brands. Also, if you have a Landi nearby (or online) they have their own brand as well at Landi prices.

Our kittens are eating two to three 80g tins a days @80-90 centimes each. So 3f60 a day. Of course the premium foods cost more. Having dry food available 24/7 is what we do.
Other things to consider are,
Drinking water fountain, (and replacement filters)
Cat Treats to reward them when the do the right thing,
Litter tray with a good lid to stop the litter scatter, cats love to dig
Kittie Litter! Or they will poo in your plants after throwing the earth arounf the room. Even if they outdoor cats (not recommended) they will need something indoors.
A way to store and dispose of used litter (ours go out with the household waste, but thats just once a week). There are green options here.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

no way to answer that with 1 number
i have two cats who have entirely different needs, 1 will eat anything and everything and preferably all day long, the other has an allergy to specific foods, is very picky as it is and you need to stand next to him so that he will actually eat...

so for cat 1 I can buy cheap food from Coop and she thrives on it, for cat 2 I need to get special food which costs more of course.
dont just check online but also at Migros & Coop about the foods they have on offer, sometimes you will run out and have to get food there for sure, but otherwise the links meloncollie mentioned are great.

A cat can also ruin your wallpaper and it will not be taken in account by your insurance.

Scratching post. And spray it with catnip when you get it. Also get some anti-cat spray to protect your stuff. Nail clippers will also be worthwhile. Get them used to it early.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Do some research for all products you need if you want to save money.

For example, we use Biokat's Diamond Car cat litter.
For 10 liter, you pay:
12.90 CHF on Zooplus
7.75 EUR on Amazon.de

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

My 2 cats eat more than I do

I'd say 10CHF a day on food. They eat Kattovit Hypoallergenic wet food from Fressnapf. Cat litter costs around 30 a month.

So just on food and litter My guys cost me around 250-300

It's the medical bills My one Siamese has cost me over CHF10K, he's had spinal surgery, teeth removed, toe removed, in and out wit blown ass-gaskets, asthma (although we can share the same medication here)

Plus you should factor in cat hotels for when you go away.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Perhaps instead of "buying" a cat, you should adopt? You can save that money for the inevitable expense of having one.

We feed our two cats high protein premium food - back when I was broke in my young 20's, I fed my first cat what I could afford, and he passed away of stomach cancer at a young age. I am not sure if that is the reason why he got cancer, but I don't take my chances now. There is a lot of junk out there and best to buy from a good source.

With cat litter, toys and a mixture of wet and dry food, we spend around 150 CHF per month on our spoiled monkeys. They are worth every penny and I hope you experience the joy of having them in your life as much as we do.

Cats can hunt and feed themselves. Their diet consists of mostly of birds, mice and other little wild life.
Kitty litter by the way is radioactive. So let em do their business out doors.

I assume you are being sarcastic so I won’t groan you. Cats are not endemic and they reek havoc on local wildlife. They should be kept in, at least overnight.

Re: How much does a cat food cost per month?

Hi bowlie,
Is that really the case? We have a cat that hunts (mainly mice but can also go for bats or rats) we have never been told by vets or the zoo (we brought up the bat he caught to the zoo - long story) to keep him indoors & that he should not be allowed hunt.

Do you have a link or data on this recommendation?
Thanks

True, mine are repulsed by catnip and it does nothing for them, Valerian on the other hand, has them writhing and salivating in the most unbecoming way

You forgot to mention a scratch post, preferably several (spread over different rooms). This is very important for indoor cats but also recommended for outdoor cats. If only to save your furniture.

If you have more than one cat you may need different posts for each cat as scratchings can also serve as territorial markings and can be a source of disputes.

Some cats prefer natural wood to artificial scratch posts. Our cat loves elderberry wood so we always get fresh cuttings from the garden (these last about a year until the bark is completely scratched off). She generally shuns her purpose-made scratch post and scratches these wooden ones instead. We discovered this by accident when she started scratching around on the firewood. She also loves olive wood if we can get it, and will even chew around on our olive-wood chopping board when she thinks we aren't looking. So we brought some branch cutting back from Spain and she simply loves them.
