question on coronavirus pcr test

Hello,

I was having a soar throat and headaches, so went to have a coronavirus PCR test to check if I had coronavirus at a local clinic. While waiting in the clinic's waiting room, there was a man who was clearly sick and suddenly started blowing his nose profusely within about a metre from me. I moved further away quickly and was wearing a double mask and glasses, so felt that the mask would protect me in case I had gotten "sprayed" by him.

When the nurse called me in for the test, I went into the exam room and she asked me to lower my mask and tilt back my head, so I did that. And then she proceeded to do the nasal swab. She missed the first time and jabbed the outside of my mask hard - essentially swabbing the outside of my mask with the sterile swab - and then right after that, stuck the swab deep down my nose into my nasal cavity.

I know the swab is sterile when it is removed from the packaging. But as the sterile swab touched the outside surface of my mask (which has been protecting me from covid by blocking the virus with its surface) - in fact jabbed me hard on the outside of my mask - just before it went down my nose, do you think there is a risk that she transmitted the virus to my nasal cavity?

I have certain high risk conditions, and am really concerned. I alerted the nurse that she had just touched the outside of my mask with the swab before she put it down my nose, but she said it didn't matter and couldn't see anything wrong with that. Honestly, nurses should be disqualified from doing the covid PCR test if they do not have the hand-eye coordination or the care to get the sterile swab into a person's nasal cavity without it first hitting dirty, unclean surfaces. Because the swab is no longer sterile and becomes contaminated if it does so, before it goes down the nose.

I don't know. Is there a risk that the nurse's carelessness just transmitted covid virus down my nasal cavity?

Look forward to your comments and regards,
Greengrass

Your mask doesn't protect you from Covid, if the virus was on the outside of your mask then there is a high likelihood that you have it.

You are just best off waiting for the result of your PCR test and trying not to overthink it!

Re: question on coronavirus pcr test

I agree if someone already had covid, the mask would be saturated with the virus both on the inside and the outside surfaces. And it's true that the mask only offers some protection from coronavirus, someone wearing a mask can still get coronavirus.

But, for someone who did not already have covid, considering how long covid can stick on the surface of a fabric material like a mask, might the swabbing of the surface of the mask with the sticky swab potentially pick up the virus and transmit it down someone's nasal cavity?

Shouldn't there be some protocol among health workers that you cannot allow the sterile swab to touch any unclean or potentially virus contaminated surfaces before the health workers puts the swab deep inside someone's nose?

Considering how casual and clueless the nurse was about it, she considered it perfectly fine. God knows how many times she's giving the covid virus a free ride down somebody's nasal cavity!
