Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

Oil tank is dangerously near to being empty, but I won't need the 800L that companies require as a minimum for an order. I was about to order it anyway but then wondered: can't one just buy a tank at the time, anybody knows?

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

I just ordered a certain amount of liters instead of asking to fill the tank. Strange that they only deliver 800l or more. Can you maybe share this with a neighbour? Maybe they do not want to come for small lots?

The price per litre will be higher, possibly considerably higher for a smaller delivery.

You mean a barrel? Agrola has an minimum order of 500l
But those are online orders if you call you local oil dealer they might offer smaller amounts but the price per liter will be a bit higher.

Anyway, how small is your tank and consumption that you want to order just a tiny amount? You properly use currently around 10 l per day and a usual tank has a size of around 2000 - 3000 l

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

As we buy as part of a local group, to get better price- we can ask for any amount, including top up- as as a group we order massive amounts each time.

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

Yes I know that the price per litre would be higher, but overall still better to buy only what I need. I plan on installing a heat pump (or connect to fernwaerme) this year so that's why I'd like to leave the tank empty. I was hoping we could make it with what was left from last year but also due to working from home and not going anywhere on vacation I only have ~100L left...

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

Though I read from the other thread (https://www.englishforum.ch/daily-li...ml#post3264138) that the company normally pays the oil back to you, so perhaps it does not make a difference if I buy a bit more to get a better price.

how much do you need? if very little, you could just use diesel instead.

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

I recently thought my tank was quite low and ordered a delivery .. the truck came and i told him to fill it up ..

It only needed 600l to fill it .. No issue, i paid for just that.. Even though 800l is usually the minimum.

In other words, order 800l and when the guy comes ask him to just put in 100l or whatever.. I think the 800l is just a standard website thing, our guy always asks.

i honestly never tried this, but heard of people doing this. technically, they are very similar. according to wikipedia, in some markets they are the same thing (not sure for switzerland): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heating_oil

main downside is diesel is more expensive.

i'd be more worried about damage from running a low tank as you probably have a lot of sludge/crap at the bottom of the tank. make sure you leave the tank to settle for a while before using after filling it.

The difference between diesel and heating oil is the tax (and maybe some colour, so the cops can catch tax-dodgers, who use heating oil in their cars). You should be fine.

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

Statistically speaking 2/3 of the "HeizGradTage" (need for heating) are yet to come. Given the price difference of something like 80 Rappen per liter OP's consumption would probably need to be rather low to make diesel a useful option. And that's without taking the need for a transport container for the diesel into consideration (perhaps the car's tank would do?).

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

I did once run on Coop-tankstelle-diesel as my tank shown still 1'300L available - however my pump was way too high in the tank .

Two 25L canisters , 100CHF later I had heating for weekend with no issues folowing Monday got pump hose position fixed

Diesel is actually usually 'cleaner' version of the heating oil when it comes to some PPMs.

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

Let's say for the sake of argument that you need 500L.

I would phone either Coop or Migros (the two biggest from what I understand) and explain the problem. Tell them the no. litres needed and urgency and explain that you are flexible (someone always at home, give a Natel no. etc.) that if they have a remainder on a truck of a few hundred litres (often the case) they can fill up at your place and leave the bill. They hate going back to the depot with any heating oil still in the tanks.

Tell them you will take either regular or eco or a mix of the two to fill the tank.

The second variant on the above is sometimes to work out the number of litres and the deliveries that they need to do, a small number like 500L might help them to empty the truck on the planned delivery run.

If you need to give them access to the tank to check the level, you need to be sure that someone is always at home and that the driver will have a Natel number s/he can call just before arriving.

Re: Can one buy heating oil by the tank?

800L vs 500L -> 300L of a difference * 75CHF/L = 225 CHF - is it really worth discussion for someone that already owns 1mCHF home ?

don't forget to add 200CHF for the diesel-pump to move the fuel off the car tank ..
