So it snowed ( a little ) in Zürich!

And throws everything into chaos. Cant imagine what it would be like if it snowed for a week. Are the clean up authorities of the City of Zurich incompetent!

Don´t know where you were but here it snowed on a couple of days.

To be fair to the ZVV, if trees knock down bus lines, there is nothing much they can do until that can safely be repaired.

Yes, it was slower than I remember it from previous times. Is is then so much better in Geneva?? Did you have any snow?

Well they did in February 1985, and they are still talking about it!

Compared to what I am used from Chicago the situation was handled pretty well. Considering there is real snow in Chicago every year, they have all the equipment, facilities, procedures, and training but only around all 15 years in Zurich it is even more astonishing.

Re: So it snowed ( a little ) in Zürich!

So much snow is not normal for this area and thus there is no point to be specifically prepared for an event which happens once in 10 years. Would be unforgiving if it was handled like this somewhere in Finland or other Nordic country, where such weather events are common.

Ah yes, snow removal is always a hot topic in Chicago.

The Blizzard of '79 actually toppled the Chicago Machine.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Chicago_blizzard

(A stroll down memory lane for fellow Midwesterner oldies. I am surprised the official figure was 29 inches (ca 70cm)... I remember drifts up to the porch roofline, we couldn't open the front door for several days.)

---

But I digress, back on topic:

Zürich does amazingly well, considering how little it snows here.

Let me give you a bit different perspective on that:

1. Ambulance/Fire/Police car drivers
2. Grocery supply car drivers
3. Public transport car drivers

Makes more sense doesn't it?

Yes well. Clearing pedestrians walkways was much further down on the list

Well, depends where it was, afaik it can also be the responsibility of the owner of the place......

Apply for a job there and do it better yourself?

Well here is the answer from the City Of Zurich

https://www.tagesanzeiger.ch/wieso-t...n-543824697151

A translation

"The car lane black. The bike path white. The sidewalk gray. The streets of Zurich look something like this when it has snowed.

This pattern annoys female cyclists in Zurich, for example on Tuesday, when snow plowed away, as usual, obstructed many cycle paths. On the Pro Velo Zurich Facebook page, some complained that their means of transport continued to come second when it came to clearing snow. "The current situation is inadequate and often dangerous," says Pro Velo spokeswoman Andrea Freiermuth.

There could be another way. In Copenhagen, the color pattern is supposedly the other way around after heavy snowfall. The streets are white, the cycle paths and sidewalks dark"

Which resident of Geneva would ever refer to their city as "Genf"?

Re: So it snowed ( a little ) in Zürich!

The last time it snowed enough to make a snowman on the balcony was 2010. Before that 2008 the fountains in zurich all froze and the lake almost froze over enough to ice-skate across. If I remember correctly the coldest overnight temperature in zurich that year was -12.

What people may have forgotton to do is to heed the weather forecast. But the main problem as other said was not the snow, that was cleared very fast, it was the heavy snow weighing down the trees and knocking them over.

I recall that. Didn't have any skates, though, so no skating for me ...

I work in a school, and three children in my class reported seeing trees or parts of trees falling - two on separate cars, one on a pedestrian.

That‘s Germany. Where the owners are responsible. Here, it’s the Gemeinde, unless the whole street is private, which is rare.
