All packed up and nowhere to go

The dh and I booked a few days away in Goms for a bit of skiing, starting today.

Made it as far as Amsteg before we came to an all stop at a completely closed A2. Police were directing people back onto the highway towards Zurich with only local traffic allowed to pass onto peripheral roads.

After 3 hours at a complete standstill, we turned around, came back to Zurich, and let the flat know we were going to try again tomorrow. Sad to say, I just found out the Furka car-train is closed indefinitely due to avalanche risk.

The nav says the only other way in is via Sion, but I don't trust her. Any road warriors know of a better route?

Thank you.

Re: All packed up and nowhere to go

The long drive passing by Bern, Fribourg, Montreux and Sion is the simplest alternative. But there is a shorter way: the Lotschberg tunnel. A car train takes you from the Berner overland to Valais. Maybe the same time than the first alternative but ~100km less of driving.

Take the train? Will be quicker than driving now in any case.

Train between Fiesch & Niederwald currently not running https://twitter.com/mgbahn/status/13...637420033?s=21

Can’t imagine the ski area is open either. I’d reschedule.

Re: All packed up and nowhere to go

Road between Niederwald and Blitzingen is closed, risk of avalanches.
Road between Hospental and Rehalp is closed, risk of avalanches.
https://www.tcs.ch/de/tools/verkehrs...uelle-lage.php

In both cases the train route is closed as well because of the same reason.

Passo della Novena/Nufenenpass, Grimsel, and Furka are closed for the winter.

Currently no one can get in or out of the Goms. And it takes some time to built a tunnel under the Grimsel https://www.grimseltunnel.ch/ig-grimselbahn/

Yes, SLF even published an extra avalanche update mid morning. Unexpectedly high snowfall. Upper Valais through Andermatt into Surselva looks pretty rough.

Re: All packed up and nowhere to go

Thanks so much, everyone, for the detailed advice and updates.
Really helpful and appreciated.

I thought of the train, but dh is a post-treatment cancer patient and only one half of a vaccine into the process. I ended up taking the route Via Sion/Brig, bit of a damp drive until the last 8km into the valley.

I'm pleased to report that my New England/Vermont driving skills held up and we made it to the chalet. DH is now relaxing with a view of gently falling snow and 4 walls that aren't the usual four walls. We'll probably stick to the snowshoes and sauna, but it all feels magical just the same.

Thanks again.

It’s avalanche risk 5 - I wouldn’t be going snow shoeing!

Depends whether there is something risky above/below you, doesn't it?

Re: All packed up and nowhere to go

Sitting in the bathroom early am- I heard a loud bang above- and then the whole house rattled and shook. Several tons of wet snow had been released from our massive roof and slid right above my head- to land and cover the whole access road x 1m50! No-one could have survived that.
