The variant was never going to stay out of France permanently. Do people even know if the skiiers tested positive for the variant (they seemed to think they picked it up in France)?

This is why the French are trying to understand how and why it all happened, what were the routes chosen, etc. It seems many in the group travelled by EuroStar to Lille, and then to Lyon by TGV. Probably not taking ski equipment with them to avoid scrutiny, like the others at the same time who were turned back when boarding at St Pancras looking like skiers.

But as far as the French population is concerned- in the context of everything going on at the same time, the 'B' word, vaccines, etc - and the massive loss of jobs and 'freedom' with a super tight re confinement on the cards- 'perception' by your average French is the key, whipped up by the Press, etc. Although thank goodness, France does not have the same Tabloid (gutter) Press as the UK. Very different to the Swiss situation where resorts are opened and Covid restrictions much less than in France, with much tighter predicted for very soon- and no chance of resorts opening at all this year.

Just wondered if anyone has had any strange experiences in Switzerland following the rather stupid behaviour of our compatriots insisting on coming over here to ski etc, bringing all the new variants of COVID with them.

I'm a Brit myself, and not seen anything yet, but then again I've not been out much, but wondered if anyone on public transport or elsewhere has at least been tut-tutted or worse.

Thanks

Well if you do encounter anything be sure to clarify if they don't like you because you are British or just because you are a foreigner and let us know.

I can imagine ski resorts residents are more distant now when greeting a Brit.

looks like very strict confinement in France from Sunday- no crossing from Switzerland to France either. Not seen details yet.

Not really a strict confinement but definitely extra measures put in place.

Sounds quite strict to me, for sure.

Who said the other day going to Guadeloupe was like driving to Zurich?

Par ailleurs, "tous les déplacements en provenance et en direction de tous nos territoires ultramarins seront également soumis désormais à la production de motifs impérieux à compter de ce dimanche".

Moreover, all travel to and from all our overseas territories will also be limited to serious reasons from this Sunday.

"From this Sunday" is NOT the same as "last week", and clearly means that before there was no difference.

I doubt it. How can you tell if someone is British or not?
.
Usually as soon as you open your mouth.... and if you are from NI I can almost always tell if you’re Catholic or Protestant.

If you learn English as a foreign language, you often pick up the accent as well. My daughter’s best friend has spent so much time in our house over the last 20 years that she speaks English with a Mayo accent, uses the local slang and grammar. She has never been to Ireland, but she has no problem convincing Irish people that she comes from the west of Ireland.

Re: Anti British backlash in times of Covid

Nothing to do with Covid but over the years many of the Swiss folk I've spoken to have been quite complimentary about our decision to Brexit ourselves in the head. I mean I didn't have the heart to tell them I supported remaining in that den of thieves and autocrats

Re: Anti British backlash in times of Covid

A majority of Swiss can deduce a British accent at the least from their days of learning English at school but more from listening to youtube clips and watching Netflix or from their travel experiences. Although many may confuse a British accent with an Aussie, Kiwi or South African accent, given the geography, chances are the person will be from the UK.

Cheers

I can fool all of them and they never ever guess- not even the Brits (just ask me if I am South African or Welsh ahahaha) unless I am in the USA, or indeed South Africa, and they think I am very posh British.

Not around here.

Few can even tell that my mother tongue is English, and most of those think that I am from the UK (the rest think that I am from one of the weird bits of Italy).

I think you mean detect not deduce, but I could be wrong.

I don't think there's such thing as a singular British accent, you're just detecting a native English speaker and then you might be able to deduce which country they come from if you're lucky. Or you detect an English accent and and then define that as British.
