I think you mean detect not deduce, but I could be wrong.

I don't think there's such thing as a singular British accent, you're just detecting a native English speaker and then you might be able to deduce which country they come from if you're lucky. Or you detect an English accent and and then define that as British.
Since every English native speaker has an accent, I deliberately chose deduce.

When I speak Swiss German, the locals detect quite quickly that I知 not originally Swiss. Most ask if I知 from England which means they assume my mother tongue is English. Right language, wrong country.

Exactly. You have a 'native English speaking' accent and the highest probably in that case is the person is British. So it's not that "the majority of Swiss can [correctly] deduce a British accent but that they simply guess. This isn't deduction.

Now I worry that when Americans are shouting their heads off in the supermarket that the locals think they're English

I can usually pull it off, but when I come under suspicion I’m accused of coming from The Netherlands!

I was teaching a bit of Russian while we walked downtown yesterday, encountered some warm looks. It's probably not that foreign here.

This area isn't anti-Brit, they bought quite a few, lockdown hit pubs/restos/bars right before the Brexit came in action. I think the community appreciates it, despite the restos being closed now. It will be a hell of a party the day they open. No backlash.

Re: Anti British backlash in times of Covid

If you are very Caucasian looking then the Swiss who are ignorant or SVP enough to care about where people are from (usually 40+ years old) generally don't have much against you and even in panic-times of COVID and chances are they wouldn't single you out randomly either. Swiss also generally like Brits and identify more with them culturally vs other native English speakers such as Americans.

I have only ever once got **** for being an Auslander and that was from a woman on a train from the airport after I was returning from a business trip. She was trying to stop me sitting next to her, thinking I was an easy-pickings tourist with my suitcase. I laughed in her face and told her to sod off in German and she moved pretty quickly. Then a few people around me apologised on her behalf.

Living in Zurich, I was twice asked by 2 different TV presenters if I was American, I was with an American the first time who responded, "can't you tell he comes from Boston". This humour was definitely lost

I think the thinking is "That guy speaks really weird German, sounds a bit English but Englanders don't speak German so must be Dutch" Dutch is closer to Swiss German than real German. Either that or you're wearing something orange and/or taller than 5'8 :-) When I used to drive from Germany to UK often, whenever I got near The Netherlands the radio would pick up what sounded like English stations, but they weren't.
