Re: Notice A Dirty Rain in VD Today?

Really trippy, I woke up thinking we were back in SF - not sure if many saw the photos in the Bay Area after the forest fires but there has been a similar orangish hue all day in the area...plus a nice coat of sand forming on every surface

Allegedly not a health concern

My friend sent me a photo when SF was wrapped up in that dark orange hue, it is not that long ago, a year? My students thought it was a neat sci-fi setting.

Just watch out rinsing your glasses, I wouldn't wipe them, folks.

Just what I said to OH this morning--looks like a fire day in the Bay Area, but not as orange. Creepy and unsettling to someone who has lived through some of the worst fires in CA!

Ah haaa... So that explains the strange glow today.

Curiously, are we also having that "föhn" thing right now? I've had a weird sinus pressure headache the past few days.

In the 20 minutes article they interviewed a meteorologist and apparently it’s absolutely safe as the mineral particles are tiny and not dangerous at all.

Yes, it's quite a strong foehn, and we've had several in the past weeks. For 20 years I've spent half the year in various Alpine locations in 4 countries and never had a problem, but this past month has produced more headaches than I've had in a lifetime. Glad I brought those 500-pack bottles of aspirin from Wally World!

Okay, so that probably explains my recent headaches -- on and off -- in the past couple of weeks. The only thing that seems to help mine is Ibuprofen but then that bothers my stomach the next day. I can't win.

Is it that the foehn changes the air pressure or something? And that's what causes the headaches? I guess I was never really quite sure what the foehn is exactly, other than a warm wind (?).

Also noticed the sky looked a bit funky today when I woke up. Never seen anything like this, but I have to admit, it's really neat looking.

The foehn comes up the south side of the Alps, loses its moisture, and descends the other side dry as a bone. We've had humidity in the 30s, according to our weather machine that sits in the stube. One of its sister winds is the Chinook in Canada. Both are called "snow-eaters."

The dust is so bad now that I can barely see our big mountains.

There is some controversy about the science, but in German-speaking countries, it is blamed for everything from headaches to murder. I never believed until this past month...and I find that staying very hydrated, plus one aspirin, helps immensely.

Interesting...

Thank you so much for the tip about staying hydrated (and also an aspirin). I'll try that. Maybe a humidifier in my room tonight as well. Thanks again.

Re: Notice A Dirty Rain in VD Today?

I spend summers on Sardinia and have seen this quite often there but very rarely here. Must be one mighty jetstream that brought this stuff over the alps.

On Sardinia we never wash our car, the filthy dirt look is part of rural experience but if you will decide to go into automated car wash: use hand wash cabin to remove the dust with water jet (from a distance) first, otherwise your polish will get sanded, this dust is abrasive.

Basel had a bit of a funny sky today - very overcast but with a yellow tinge. It made our inner courtyard look strange.

Re: Notice A Dirty Rain in VD Today?

We had the same in the UK a few years back but it was worse. Felt like you was walking around in a film with an orange tint.

Soon as I looked outside I knew what it was, so I wasn't freaked out this time.
