Re: Notice A Dirty Rain in VD Today?

A guy in the store today showed me a picture of I believe his son skiing in Morgins in the orange today, it was both cool and bizarre at the same time.

Just got back from the car wash, it was quite a line.

We didn't get up there yesterday, but yes, others reported it.

Looking out of the window at our parked cars it looks like today's wet snow is doing a good enough job of washing off yesterday's sand. Not sure why anyone would bother with a car wash in the middle of winter anyway.

I don’t know about where you are, but in my parts roads are drowned under tons of salt each time a snowflake is in sight. It’s very corrosive and I have to rinse my car at least once a week (while I hardly bother in summer).

Re: Notice A Dirty Rain in VD Today?

wet rain/sleet this morning has washed the solar panels- and now snowing hard, proper snow. My car is in garage, OH's under car port - and no, we never wash them in winter.

It's not a new phenomenon, by any stretch of the imagination; I recall one ski leading slot in Flaine late in the season probably 20 years ago, where it was snowing on and off throughout the sandstorm process, so went from making fresh white tracks in the orange snow to making fresh orange tracks on the new white snow. Quite surreal.
Hi Ace, not so long ago, might be 4 years? I was trekking on a glacier in Uri, and we had a case of PINK snow (pity it was covered, but i guess this photo shows it well)... also sand, or something else?

Yes, good point, I suppose, although tbf what you're mostly washing it off is the paintwork, where it won't really do any harm.

They do grit the main road here, given that the Pas de Morgins is a major connecting route, but not the rest of the roads, and I think the volume of snow we get would soon get rid of any salt content. Certainly never noticed salty residue like you get in the cities.

So, I inquired - and back home there would be a smog allarm issued for situations like these.. I guess the fine sand might not be so bad?
Not at all. We can even see the sand grains with our eyes. The dust that kills is less than 10 micrometers in diameter. 0.01 mm or smaller, it's invisible to the eyes.

Correct, also known as WasserMelonenSchnee, water melon snow. The phenomenon's been known in the Alps for centuries (at least).

Uh-oh...another high-pressure system squeezing Sahara sand our way. It started yesterday afternoon. Time for an aspirin.
