Digital UK Passport Photo

Hello

My british passport is about to expire and I need a new one. To do this I have to get a digital photo and all the photo shops are shut.

According to the gov.uk website I can do it myself, but I've heard horror stories about multiple rejections with that and I only have textured walls (abrieb) as background and I'm sure to generate shadows.

I've seen you can use the booths and get a code but I haven't seen that working in Switzerland.

Can anyone tell me where I can get a digital photo please?

Thanks a lot
I'm in Zürich.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

I'm looking for the same, but no luck so far. I guess the code only works in UK.

I have a few good pictures taken against the wall but worried they might get rejected.

You upload the photos on their website and it tells you immediately whether they are acceptable or not.
If they’re no good just take more until you get one that’s acceptable to them.

The code is only valid in the uk.

But that's no good for me. I have only textured backgrounds (abrieb)

From the website:

Photos for adults

Use a plain light-coloured background
  • no texture or patterns
  • no objects behind you

Our walls are textured too and they accepted the photo.
No idea what abrieb means but if it’s just the standard Swiss ‘bobbly’ walls it should be fine as long as the wall is white. The ‘bobbly’ bits don’t show up on photos.
Or hang a white sheet over a door and take your photo against that.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

There are websites which will remove background from your picture like: https://www.remove.bg/

I used one of them (cannot remember if this was exactly) in the past and result was perfect, a head on a perfect white background.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

I did it myself with a small digital camera, white textured wall behind as all seem to be here. But stay at least 1m away from the wall and no texture will show (anyway, I guess they mean heavy textures).

As Belgian Mum says, the sire accepts or rejects straight away, my first one was rejected as a shadow behind me was too strong.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

We have textured walls but some of our doors are white and not textured.

I’d guess that using doctored photos isn’t exactly what they are looking for.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

We did our own without problems - just bring whatever lights you can move into the place you take the photo so there aren't any shadows on the subject or the rough wall.

The online checker rejected the photo because of shadows, which was nonsense but the subject is pale skinned with dark hair and we've seen this before... We added a comment that the photo did not have shadows, and it was accepted.

Thanks for all the replies. I was able to do it as belgium mum said.

But then I had the fun of printing out every page of my Swiss Passport to send as accompanying documentation.

I know of someone’s baby photo that was rejected by the online system. They sent it anyway as it was the best they could get and it was accepted.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

I have seen photos being used with a smile! Makes a mockery of people following the rules by keeping a straight face, I looked like a criminal in my previous passport photo Had to look at it for 10 years!

This time I sneaked in a hint of a smile. Photo was not rejected, and now I look like a good boy

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

I need to get photos done for an Irish passport (I'm determined to stay European lol). Before the current lockdown I did the ones you take with your phone then print off at a machine for a fee (they have one in the book department of Manor in Basel). However, they were absolutely vile and made me look like an ugly old bag so I decided not to use them. There is a photobooth at Rebgasse mall in Kleinbasel, but I don't know if they'd be accepted.

I'm pretty sure they say it's not permitted. But how would they know?

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

I used ProntoPhoto booth next to a local Coop (there's so many of their booths out there, just use google), 1 minute, 10 chf and you're good to go

Just make sure not only our eyes are aligned as the screen instructions and guide-lines prompts you but you also should keep your face straight to the camera, not extremely tilted (sidewise or forward)

I thought the UK passport now needed a digital photo, so you can only use a photo booth that gives you a code for HM Passport to access your photo (unlikely they exist in Switzerland).

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

Actually they do I think. I did a photo for EU passport but IIRC the machine also gave me a QR code to download the photos. There was also some promotional flyer saying that you can use some app on your smartphone, follow the instructions, upload the pic to their services and they will do the necessary post processing to make it a professional passport photo (sizing, background, etc). There should be a web site address near to the booth, check it out.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

Have used my own camera or mobile and uploaded to uk gov for a couple of passports. I think using a door as backdrop works, if not too close to it and if ambient light is good. The website's built in quality meter helps.

Re: Digital UK Passport Photo

Last time I needed a photo I just uploaded a home taken photo. A modern smartphone is perfectly adequate. The most important thing is the lighting, so loads of indirect lighting is usually best. The texturing on white Swiss walls was no problem and don't smile. If the result looks something like you would expect in a mug shot, you're probably about right.
