Re: Commuting between UK and Switzerland

I am now on my way back from the UK to Switzerland, so here's a quick update in case it's helpful to anyone else doing the same thing over the next few days.

Channel Tunnel terminal at Folkestone: no questions asked about destinations or reason for travel by either the British or French border police. Also no questions from the French officials about travelling during the lockdown in the Hauts-de-France region. They both wanted to see my negative Covid test, but that's all. No delays either: I arrived early, was put on an earlier shuttle than the one I had booked, and all in all, went through all the formalities faster than in normal times. Much better than 10 days ago at Calais.

I exited France into Belgium, where I am staying overnight before returning to Switzerland tomorrow. No problems on the road in the lockdown area, no police patrols or border checks between France and Belgium. Traffic around Calais and Dunkerque seemed to be more or less at normal levels, but between Dunkerque and the border it was very eerie, I basically had the motorway to myself until the first exit on the Belgian side.

Anyone done the U.K. testing package? Wondering if you could use result from day 2 or 8 test to travel back to CH?

I don't think so... the day 2 and 8 self-tests are NHS tests, and as such are not valid for travel, even though they seem to be exactly the same (back of throat followed by nostril) as the private "fit to fly" tests.

Also, the email notification that you receive from the NHS with your test result does not specifically say that it's a PCR test, it just says "Dear xx, your recent coronavirus test has come back negative". Presumably this is done deliberately to stop people using it for travel.

From the site of the UK embassy in France:

The NHS indicates that it will not carry out tests for travel purposes. Private entities offering the same service must therefore be used.

This is what the day 2 and 8 test results look like - definitely not enough details for travel I think.

Has anyone left the country before the second test? It’s allowed, but wonder if it causes drama when they don’t get your second test?

Re: Commuting between UK and Switzerland

Just to complete my trip report... came back through the border in Basel earlier this afternoon, and was stopped by the Swiss border police. I told them that I had been in two high-risk countries (England and Belgium), and asked them if they wanted to see my Covid test result. They declined the offer; the only thing they were interested in was whether I was carrying any meat !

I certainly thought about it, but decided that post-Brexit they might get confiscated, which would be a terrible end for sausages. And I made very sure to finish my ham sandwich before getting onto the shuttle in Folkestone ;-)

When I landed in the UK last Friday basically being asked to prove evidence of working here and travelling to UK as a regular commuter. The UK site suggests you should carry evidence from your employer (i.e. to prove why you have to work in Switzerland and couldnt work in UK remotely for example).

Now we just need the UK to relax measures too!

I know someone who's going to be horrified! ;-)

I don't see this for a while here with the vaccine numbers. They were talking about red listing EU countries this week which would mean enforced hotel stays coming into the UK.

Re: Commuting between UK and Switzerland

Hi all,

I hope you don't mind me jumping in on this thread as a newcomer. Currently I live in the UK and I've recently accepted a permanent job just south of Basel, proposed start date of May 1st.

My new employer is going through the B-permit application process which we think will come back mid to late-April. Obviously this doesn't leave a great deal of time to sort out some accommodation so I was hoping to get across before then to look at a few places and sort out something out (even-temporarily!) for when I start properly e.g. flat-share or similar.

I have no concerns about getting out of the UK since I'm comfortable this wont fall foul of the non-essential travel rules (I can show them a copy of my Swiss contract if necessary) but I'm a little confused as to my ability to enter Switzerland.

Today the FOPH has taken the UK off the list of risk countries so no 10-day quarantine any more (great news!) but I noted that the UK is not included on the SEM list of non-high risk countries (https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home...countries.html).

Can anyone offer any clarification, without a work or residency permit, can UK nationals travel gain direct entry to Switzerland currently?

My other option is to wait until my B-permit is approved, but as I mentioned earlier it really doesn't leave much time for me to organise things.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Only for arrivals on or after 5th April though, so anyone travelling next week will still have to quarantine.

No. Click on the U.K. https://www.covid19.admin.ch/en/inte...nal/quarantine .... it’s from tomorrow 25th!

From what I can see those coming off the list come off tomorrow. Those going on the list go on on the 5th.

Hmm... then it's contradicting the German and French versions on:
https://www.bag.admin.ch/bag/de/home...nde/liste.html

BAG-Liste der Risikoländer
Die neu hinzugefügten Staaten und Gebiete sind in der entsprechenden Liste jeweils in fetter Schrift hervorgehoben.

Liste gültig bei der Einreise ab dem 5.4.21

I wonder which version is right?

I got this link from Easyjet, private firms also do the test & cheaper than the NHS test https://www.randoxhealth.com/covid-19-home-testing-kit/ Further discount code from Easyjet website

Or have I misunderstood? They have a test to release
