Re: Public Toilets - [shady experience]

I've had some interesting approaches from people in or near public toilets over the years ... quite often people looking to buy drugs, never anyone trying to sell to me. Not sure why, really ... how come I look like a dealer, but not an addict? The funniest one was a guy who said he hadn't had a conversation with anyone for over a year, and he just wouldn't shut up from the next stall. He had a few cool stories, obviously saved up over the course of that year, and the only disturbing part was that he rushed to do the paper work after he heard me flush and wanted to continue the conversation as I made my way home. Fortunately he didn't make my tram, since he had good enough hygiene training to wash his hands as well once he was done.

Or carry a frozen chicken. Some guy made the mistake of grabbing my boob in the Safeway store when I was holding one of those netted birds by the handle. It made a great club, and there was a satisfying *crack* as it hit the side of his head. That little lady was stronger than he thought...
Cans in canvas shopping bags are also good, often better than a half-brick in a sock - better reach.

Re: Public Toilets - [shady experience]

There is one particular park in Basel where if you are a lone dude late at night, you will be approached by other well dressed lone dudes. Don't people have Tinder or Grindr now for those kind of hook ups? I guess it is the element of surprise that turns them on?

We only learned of this fact after we moved from our temporary accommodation close by ... we used to walk through there coming back from a night out all the time, never saw anything.

Good that you mention Tinder and Grindr, but not every single uses them. Last year I listened to a story of someone who still goes to clubs with dark rooms. If this have happened in a club where more or less everyone is aware of the possibilities, OP story would be a dinner story, not an anxiety triggering episode. I guess the people who go to these clubs, which are closed now, may be freaking out people in the street....and this is not OK .

I've heard stories about a forested area near Aarau known for sexual encounters: poppers and toys. Fortunately it is flat, so no conflicts with MTB

PS.I got scared once for some very very stupid thing. It was in my first month in Switzerland. My knowledge of French was close to zero at the moment. I left work after sunset and walked to the bicycle parking. I felt utterly vulnerable because I was squatting to open the lock when I heard someone talking behind my back really close, like 1m close. I froze for a moment in panic, then I listened to the more or less same unintelligible words.....and jumped and turned around as fast as possible with the bike lock in hand ready to use it as a weapon. The guy looked at my scared face, asked one more time the thing I did not understood.....realized I did not understood and mimicked the question: do you have lighter? He had already a cigarette in his mouth, and a broken lighter in hand. I just laughed and said, no, sooooorry dude. And he left in his quest for a cigarette lighter. So, there's something in our heads that makes irrelevant things look scary or scary things looks scarier when we feel like foreigners, when we're not familiar with the area, etc. Consider this when assessing if the scariness of every situation.

One thing I noticed is uncommon here is catcalling or wolf-whistlings. Gott sei Dank.

Does that still go on in other countries then? I thought it was pretty much dead all over, certainly (I thought) in the "western world".

I'm not sure is dead, France for instance adopted a law against street harassment in 2018. Less and less common, yes.

Many years ago, in a very large city the US, I was sitting in a public toilet stall with the door locked, minding my own "business", when I noticed a bearded man staring at me through a gap between the door and the doorframe of the stall. I gave him a stare back but he didn't flinch. So, I then said with as much disdain as I could muster, "Would you like to come in and wipe my ass?" His excited response: "Could I?"
I once used a service station toilet, one of those where you borrow the key.

As it happens, the lock was broken. My cunning plan involved sitting on the toilet with my legs high in the air with my heels flat against the toilet door to stop anyone pushing it open, while I went about my business.

Imagine my surprise, and that of the next person to discover that the door opened outwards.

"There is one particular park in Basel" - where about? OH thinks it might be Kannenfeld, somebody told him it's like the equivalent of Hampstead Heath or Battersea Park in London at night.

@Ace1

You'd be surprised

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/ent...ByElquF8KSfPE8

Quote:
Shockingly, half (51%) of the 1,000 girls surveyed experienced public sexual harassment over this summer alone, with worries over harassment adding to the multitude of concerns they’re already facing due to the pandemic.
An overwhelming 94% of girls said they think street harassment should be illegal, and 72% said knowing it was a criminal offence would make them more likely to report it to the police.
Still think it's dead in the Western world?

I was gonna say, very much not!

R.E. Cottaging/cruising - still very much a thing. A lot of people do it because it brings more of a thrill than arranging a hook-up via Tindr or Grindr. Think it's the whole thrill of being almost public, potentially getting caught etc. I mean, do you, just don't cross the line into harassment.

Ok, maybe didn't word that brilliantly, excuse me
I meant that cruising, cottaging, dogging, whatever, don't necessarily go hand in hand with harassment, but I'm in no means defending harassment in any way; the examples the OP gave obviously do fall into the category of harassment, which is not ok.

Haha! Maybe that’s the new spot, but for a long time it has been Schutzenmatt Park. You know, the one where all of Gross Basel brings their kids to.

Sadly it seems as if there were some attacks there not too long ago:

I think it's the number of smokers - their mouths are already occupied with a cigarette, so they can't whistle around them.

Female mountaineers and mountain guides that I know generally just drop their pants wherever they happen to be. All the shewee does is enable women to pee standing up, but I imagine the hassle involved, getting it in place through multiple layers of outdoor clothing, would make it more difficult, not less. And how you'd use one when paragliding I cannot begin to imagine.

I stand (or sit) to be corrected by any female mountaineers or paragliders on here who can actually speak from personal experience.

I think I am with you. That's why I ask. I used to be a scout and have been to two Safaris and in the Amazonas. I am not sure if it would have helped me.
