Reasonably priced 0% beer.

I’ve decided I’d like to reduce my alcohol intake and am thinking of trying 0% beer. But in the Coop today all I could find was Heineken and Feldschlossen both for 1.90 for 50cl.

On special I can buy real beer at the Coop for 0.50.

WTF?

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

Drink tap water. It is cheaper and tastes better than these 0% versions.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

Generally non-alcoholic beer is made by removing the alcohol from regular beer by heating it and then re-gassing it and adding something like sugar to modify the lost flavour..

So i guess the extra production steps adds to the price?

* What beer costs 50c for 500ml ??

Don't forget that sellers don't have to pay alcohol duty on alcohol free beer, but sell at the same price levels as regular beer. So their margin is usually higher with alcohol free.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

Go to Landi, they have good prices for non-alcoholic beer. The Bilz panache is quite ok.

https://www.landi.ch/fr/shop/bieres-sans-alcool_200202

The Farmer sans alcohol cost .50 chf for 50 cl

It's surprisingly nice too. I think last time it was 35 rappen, so a bargain compared to the Coop versions

Coop often has beers on offer at that price.
Hubby has bought 24 cans of Lowenbrau or Budvar (plus others I can’t remember) for 13chf.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

Feld are frequently giving their 0 % beer away for free at the train stations ...

Kudos to you for trying to cut back, but since beer makes me gain weight like crazy, I don't drink it all without booze. I need it to be worth it!

I do sparkling water with great fresh fruit additives when I'm off the booze.

It's more that the higher price is what the market will bear.

Bilz Panache? 8g of sugar per 100 ml. Might as well drink Coke.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

maybe try the aldi one (about 0.5-0.7 a can, the green one). The alcohol version is good, naturtrub as well but stay away from the weizen.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

Lowenbrau alcohol-free weizen isn't bad (from Denner). Feldschloessli alcohol free is just a short bridge to drinking sparkling water.
I've only ever had one convincing alcohol free beer, but that was O'Doul's in the US. I'd rather drink that than regular Feldschloesschen.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

From Coop they often have their Anchor own brand, brewed in Rhinefelden, normally f27 for 24 .5cl tins at f12. I usually buy a few when this happens.

It’s a nice lager, not great but not bad.

Please note that "alkoholFrei" isn't 0% alcohol, it just needs to be below a certain threshold like 1% or 2% or so. That may become a problem if you drive.

Re: Reasonably priced 0% beer.

I've tried every alcohol-free beer I've been able to find here and by far prefer Eichof above all the others, and it's readily available at Migros for quite a good price. It's the only alcohol-free beer I've tasted that I think might actually fool beer drinkers in a blind taste test.

All UK AF free beers I've tried declare alcohol to be 0.5% because there will always be a chance of a residue of the good stuff in it.

And re price, it's down to extra work and supply and demand. If a brewery brews 10,000 L of beer a day (OK, a small brewery), then once a month they have to brew 1000L of AF beer, then the production costs go up.

I buy the Brewdog Nanny State AF pale ale for my bar in Zürich, it costs me more than their special Elvis Juice Double IPA!

But if you want a good AF beer, I sugest the German Lola IPA (actually, more like a Pilsener) and Jever Pils, the closest I've ever got to real beer taste.

I think it is 0.5%. So one tenth of normal beer. Assuming you can have two beers and still drive, you would need to drink 20 of the alcohol free version.
