Where to sell gold jewelry?

I never did that before.
Do I just find a decent jewelry shop and ask them to price it?

Does anyone have something to recommend in Basel?

They generally weigh it & give you scrap value.

Re: Where to sell gold jewelry?

A second hand jewellery shop might be better if it is something that can be sold on, or that has gem stones in.

Re: Where to sell gold jewelry?

A bit surprised you've never found in your mailbox a flyer about "we buy gold, watches...." .

If you don't find one, I can take a look at my recycling box, there's always one of those flyers

Yes that's what I am looking for.
I don't expect them to value "the looks".

Re: Where to sell gold jewelry?

Weigh it in grams, look up the scrap (gold/silver/platinum) price online, and figure out what troy weight you are selling before you go. That way you will know if the buyer is offering a fair price. Generally jewels are not valued much by buyers unless the diamond or whatever has been certified...

Re: Where to sell gold jewelry?

Antiquarians also sometimes encounter metal items they can buy cheaply, knowing they are not saleable...when they have enough unloved ugly metal, they sell it to the smelters. I sold a bunch of unloved sterling (not the currency!) to an antiques dealer, who gave me a very good price. Oh, and obviously be sure you know the stering/925 status of silver and the karat of the gold, and figure that in to your expectations.

Re: Where to sell gold jewelry?

Hi gipfelisturmer ( and Axa )

Be careful with these 'flyers' for Buy now, and the roving 'We buy' who set up in the local restaurant / corner shop / hall ... As these guys are looking to buy at the cheapest possible price and then sell onwards at realistic prices.

For example a vintage locket with embedded stones, will be bought for scrap value, and then sold correctly as the antique it actually is !!
Shysters.
If you have interesting items to sell, go to a local jeweller, as they will be open at the same address next week.

Checked the flyer haha Didn't know the also buy metal by weight. 10 shops around CH https://rent-a-box.ch/ankauf

I've seen the store in Aarau center and they literally rent little boxes in a shopwindow where you display a watch or jewelry. I remember passing by and joking to my wife about the amount of wedding rings on display.

PS. OP already mentioned being interested in scrap metal value.

Went to this place, and got an offer for 890.
Literally next to it a small local jewelry shop, 1740.
(but would need to confirm with proper testing)

One only cares about the metal. The other might try to sell the jewellery first.

I have a very artistic piece of jewellery from Ecuador. When I got it checked they told me Fr. 2700.00 but they can only give me the gold price (about 800.00) as they would not be able to sell it here and melt it down.
I was not planning to sell, I wanted to know the value.

Funnily enough, the second one was the one that was explicit about being able to price it purely as scrap.

The final buying price they offer in the end could differ slightly, as they will probably take a commission (10-15% perhaps, they need to profit ultimately ).
Still, the difference stunned me.

scrap value is only for bog standard, poor quality. Anything with a specific design or maker, or style - depending on period or name- could me a very very diffferent matter.
