| | Criminal activities in Basel City discussion
Hi guys, I'm new here and planning to stay in Basel city area for few months.
I don't have much knowledge on how safe Basel is, coming from a Third World, Asian background.
Is Basel City safe to walk alone at night? especially for single woman?
How common is theft, rape and murder? Is there an average figure for each?
What is the average age in the city population?
For anyone staying in Basel, how do you rate the safety level for this canton?
Thank you!

Google says (based on actual stats not anecdotal info from a forum...) : https://www.numbeo.com/crime/in/Basel Very low.
As someone who's come from working in London I would say its massively safer here for single women (I'm a guy but believe me there are places even at close to 2m tall I don't feel safe in London alone).
I see women jogging alone in hills and around woods here whilst I'm out walking and there's no way you would see that in a lot of places in the UK nowadays in comparison. I'd be happy to let my young kids walk around in the streets here and again wouldn't in the UK in a lot of places.

My opinion as a man. It's safe, maybe not as safe as some places in asia but it's safe. If anything does happen it's usually in Klein Basel (east of the river) where the socio-economic make-up is generally lower than in Gross Basel.

Have you heard of Tijuana? Well Tijuana has nothing on Basel. Shoot-outs are daily occurrence on the bad streets of Basel every day! This from last week when I went out to get Gipfeli from my corner shop! | This user would like to thank Talk to you later for this useful post: | |

Fair point I stand corrected - but at least more stats than asking a few mates at least. The actual bag.ch stats though only give actual numbers not an indicator of value vs somewhere else so at least that site gives a quick guide a bit more easily.

Outside public transport regular hours, perhaps be a little more careful - whether male or femail. | Quote: | | | | How common is theft, rape and murder? | | | | | All three? Very very uncommon. Last two - also very very uncommon. Theft? Quite uncommon - except bicycles. | Quote: | | | | What is the average age in the city population? | | | | | Demographics here: https://www.citypopulation.de/en/swi...t/2701__basel/
My daughters have never felt unsafe in the city. I've known a few women have a few unpleasant incidents in isolated parts of the tram network late at night (e.g. Dreispitz). Usually at night, even around midnight, there's loads of people around, of all ages. (Pandemics notwithstanding).

Thank you! | | | | | Switzerland is basically very safe, crime is very low, worse just over the border in France.

Not too dangerous, AFAIK.
Statistics for the whole of Switzerland: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._homicide_rate https://dataunodc.un.org/data/crime/sexual-violence https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/de/home....15844440.html (German)
I'd probably avoid the Rhine, especially between Wettsteinbrücke and Johanniterbrücke, after midnight, plus a few other places (again, after midnight), but generally speaking, you should be safe. My sister used to live in what would be considered one of the "worst" parts of town (whatever passes for "worst" in Switzerland) and said she never felt unsafe walking home.

I've generally felt much safer in Basel than most other cities I've lived in or visited, but as a cis white man, that's not saying much...
My wife has been followed by creepy men near the train station when walking out of the station alone at 10PM, that's an area I'd be more careful (I.e. Avoid the small pedestrian alleys and tunnels at night). Probably also some streets in Klein Basel would better be avoided late at night. But generally it seems pretty safe.
I know some of my female friends who sometimes don't feel so safe late at night do feel much safer biking than walking or taking the tram. Basel is a very nice and easy city for cycling (it's also the cheapest way to get around and the fastest, short of driving), so that's another aspect.

Hi haksam, let’s keep this simple: pretty much all of Switzerland is safe for women at night. Even more so when compared to Malaysian cities. Low crime doesn’t mean no crime, but with a bit of common sense will you be absolutely fine.

Many women who move to Switzerland from more dangerous places think it is a fairy tale here and practice almost zero caution ... please don't do that. Although it is much better here than most places in the world, things still do happen and have happened to me and some dear friends of mine.
Don't be paranoid and overly cautious, just practice some street smarts.

Stay aware what's happening in the streets: https://polizeiticker.ch/kanton/basel-stadt
For the most part, Basel is very safe, as long as you don't get hit by a tram, a bike, or a drunk near Claramatte after 11pm.
