Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

So I need to travel to the USA in about 10days
I'm starting my research on which test is required by my airlines (United).

As I'm researching I thought I'd ask to see if anyone else has recently gone through this.

What I'm looking for:
* what exact test is required
* in Zurich is there a recommended place to go
* Is there a standard price or do they vary between places.

Thanks, I'm sure others have asked similar questions so if these details are already commented on please direct me.
Again -- I'm just now starting my research and as I started to research I came up with a question that all the answers I found seemed to be a bit out of date (or at least I assumed it was).

Re: Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

Hello, my wife will cross the Atlantic in a few weeks but with Lufthansa. I guess the requirements are the same.

The test type is PCR. The plan is to take the test in kanstonspital Aargau. Price 114 CHF and they send the results in a PDF in German via email. I'm sure Universitatspital Zurich should offer a similar service.

Re: Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

PCR within 72 hrs of flight departure. In addition, some countries (i.e. NL) require a rapid antigen test within 3 hrs of flight departure, even when just transiting. I flew this past week and the antigen test was not enforced due to being newly instituted but I had already booked an airport test. GVA has this so I am sure ZRH does as well, this is a cottage industry now as most airports are going to have on site testing services

All in all it was pretty smooth I would say, surreal to be in a plane that was 70% empty for a transatlantic flight. Not fun to wear a mask for the entirety of the flight (apart from meal service) but then again, nurses & healthcare workers are doing this 12 hrs a day

Thatís actually not correct: You only need the antigen test if you enter NL, not for transit. Yes, KLM sends out like a dozen emails warning you about the two tests... so I booked the antigen one and had to go to the airport at 5 am... just to find out that the small print says that you donít need it.

Re: Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

As noted, you need a PCR test and be very, very cautious on the 72 hour rule.

I went back to the US recently and there were two other passengers who's test was taken 73 hours before departure and the airline would not let them board the flight. Quite a commotion as you could imagine.

Also, bring a printed copy of the results as I needed to present this when checking in at Zurich, at the departure gate and again at US immigration.

It's just one way, though ... US/UK can enter Switzerland without quarantine but not the other way round ... I am always under the impression that Switzerland makes things easier for everybody but its citizens ...

Directly from the KLM app, in the small print:
Quote:
All passengers travelling to the Netherlands that depart from a high-risk country have to show a negative COVID-19 test result. You can choose from the 2 following options. Option 1 is 1 NAAT (PCR) test result thatís issued within 24 hours before boarding. Option 2 is 1 NAAT (PCR) test result that's issued within 72 hours before arrival in Amsterdam AND 1 rapid antigen test thatís taken within 24 hours before boarding. If you have a transfer in Amsterdam, you only need 1 NAAT (PCR) test result that's issued within 72 hours before arrival in Amsterdam. If you're departing from outside the EU or Schengen area, you also need to show a printed, signed negative declaration upon arrival. If you depart from a high-risk country, you'll have to go into a 10-day quarantine upon arrival in Amsterdam.
They still send you several email about the two tests although they should know you are just transferring...

Re: Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

It has been very clear the last weeks that airport staff does not know/understand what the exact requirements are........ had it twice boarding a Swiss flight to Germany that the woman insisted I had to have a test. Rules are that you have to be able to show a test within 48 hrs after landing, you do need the Reiseanmeldung though.

If I understand the above correctly, Swiss citizens traveling from the US back to Switzerland no longer need to go into quarantine in Switzerland as of March 25. Can someone confirm this?

Re: Traveling to USA -- what covid test is required?

I see BAG is saying new list enters into force 5 April. Thought they normally give just a few days notice, but list is updated on data from a 2 week period. Seems a bit confusing , but anyone think US would stay off the list at least for a few weeks?

Believe the covid test has to be 3 calendar days beforehand so not time of day constrained. this is from the cdc, so people donít get messed up by the time stamp. Sounds like a ticket agent stuck on 72 hour rule and not reading guidelines correctly. It can also be a rapid viral test I believe. Donít think there is any mandatory quarantine either.
