Zurich dropped French in favour of English a long time ago, I was amused that I understood when the French seeking French were talking amongst themselves but the younger Swiss Germans had no idea what was going on.

The only person I speak English to at work (and even then only 50%, otherwise we speak French) is from Luxembourg.

Alas, French is slowly dying at work, as Italians only speak Italian (and really bad English).

From my observations, there is also a big presence of germans in swiss german work places, especially highly educated workplaces, and they often have no knowledge of French, but have passable English.

So this contributes to a similar trend.

Besides, in my limited experience, swiss germans usually have better English than French if they're not from a border region.
Swiss germans with very good French that I know, usually speak English even better.

So immigrants and cross-border commuters just accelerate what is a trend anyway.
