Shower head filter for hard water

Hi all,

The hard water in Basel has been irritating me and my girlfriend's scalp and skin, and we were wondering if there were any solutions for this. We were thinking about purchasing a showerhead filter, thoughts and suggestions please!

Re: Shower head filter for hard water

A shower head filter is not going to do anything for hard water, the only real solution is an ion exchange water softener - not something you can install yourself in a rented flat and pretty expensive if you can do it.

But maybe also look at a different / milder shampoo, it could be the combination with the water that's the problem.

Re: Shower head filter for hard water

I can confirm that ion loaded shower head was helpful. But in my case home ventilation system had much more effect than water. Since moving to a minergie apartment (with internal ventilation which makes the humidity levels insanely low, i.e. below 30%, on coldest days reaching 20%) both me and husband have very dry skin, scalp, hair, etc. We have the same shower head as in the previous apartment...

Move to Ticino, no hard water here except for Stabio.

This, for shampoo.

And this can help, too: switch from shower-gel to a bar of soap or, better still, stop using both gel and soap altogether and wash with only water and a cloth.

Wash those cloths (and all your towels and clothing) with only a small amount of washing detergent, never use fabric softener, and if you feel the need softening, simply add one tablespoon of plain vinegar to your load of laundry in the machine.

Yes, this came as a complete surprise to us. Virtually no calc residue.

Previously we had very hard water, we installed a water softener centrally, but it was our own house. I don't know of a solution for an apartment other than asking the owner to install something centrally. Hard water can cause damage to appliances. Do you know the water hardness level?

It's only hard in and around Stabio, already here (I work in Mendrisio, 8km from Stabio) it's not, though it's also hard just over the border in Varese and Como.

Thanks Doropfiz for the white vinegar tip for the washing machine. Stopped using conditioner long time ago, due to allergies, only use it for curtains, not clothes.

Separately both OH and self have problems with water quality by travelling different countries.

Re: Shower head filter for hard water

I live in Basel and never have had a problem with so-called hard water. I even looked it up once and according to what I found I should put my dishwasher salt setting on the minimum. I mean it's not soft (which is fine with me) but I've decalced my kettle maybe once in 9 years.

Re: Shower head filter for hard water

Here is the map with the water hardness indicated (zoom in to the Basel area). Click on the markers to get the details.

In town it is not too bad but in BL it is towards the high end like where I live since we get water from aquafers and not the lake (soft water). For example Schönenbuch (BL) is 42 °fH on the French scale! Anything above 25 is considered hard.

The second link is a static map that shows the general idea. Click on the map to expand it. As Tom mentioned, TI has pretty soft water in general.

Excuse my ignorance but which lake? I'm in town where it's supposed to be about 17.

The lake I am talking about is lac Leman (lake Geneva) where towns like Lausanne and Morges get their water. As you move away from the lake towns will often get their water from underground sources which are very hard (more than 40 °fH) so you ideally would soften your water with a system like Culligan.

Re: Shower head filter for hard water

The water from Lac Lemain is fairly hard.

And not even the Genevois call it Lac Genevé. Mostly the english-speaking foreigners.

I'd be surprised if anyone called it that (lac de Genève maybe)

I'd have thought they would call it lake Geneva seeing as that is its English name.

So let's go back to my initial reply where I referenced "the lake".

"In town (BS) it is not too bad but in BL it is towards the high end like where I live since we get water from aquafers and not the lake (soft water).

I was using an English sentence structure where I compare my situation (small village in VD) to the situation found in BS and BL. The lake (un-named) I was referring to is of course the one 5 km from where I live and which supplies a lot of the cities/towns along the lake but not all villages inland from the lake. The official name of the lake in FR is lac Léman while in DE it is Der Genfersee. English speakers call it Lake Geneva.

Clear?

Almost, except that I know plenty of French speakers in France and Switzerland who call it "lac de Genève".

Tom

Hence why I used the term "official name".

To confuse things more, there are also some people who use the term "lac de Genève" for the little part of the lake that is situated within the canton of Geneva and le léman / lac léman for the rest of the lake.

Thanks, yes. The "since.." part of the sentence applies to the "in BL" hence my confusion, but nevermind, cleared up now.
