Yes they are, but at this moment in time you still need to quarantine. As sh1tty as that is, it's your choice not to visit.
For some people there isn’t really much choice. It’s a logistical nightmare.

School holidays are short as it in in most places in Switzerland. If you have to quarantine in the UK on arrival, then spend time visiting family over there and then quarantine in Switzerland when you get back if the kids are either too young to have been vaccinated or chose not to the whole of the school holidays are gone. That’s also assuming parents can take that much holiday from work over the summer which is probably unlikely.

But for some people, its just any chance to have a go at the UK after Brexit, regardless of the facts / situation. ... N.B. Shapps was a remainer. I don't see anyone having a go at Biden - and the US have tougher controls than the UK do atm.
It's nothing of the sort.
Management of the pandemic is nothing, zilch, nada to do with brexit, regardless of how much the UK gov like to conflate the two.

There's a distinct irony in the fact that if I had an Italian passport and ticket for Sunday's final at Wembley, I'd be allowed to fly to the UK without quarantining. But with a British passport and UK recognised vaccines which were administered in Switzerland, I'd have to quarantine.

Not from Switzerland you wouldn't.

Only on a specific flight from Italy tied to that ticket, with almost quarantine while you're there and then another specific flight back in less than a day.

Don't get me wrong. I'm no fan of this government, and especially of its pandemic management.

I'm not a fan of politicians full stop, but more than that, I despise the lack of joined up thinking, which has been repeated again this morning when Shapps was interviewed on GMB.

Simple fact is, whilst the rest of the first world was developing covid vaccination certification schemes, the UK gov were bowing to pressure not to have one because it created two tier system. The rest of the world cracked on regardless with the likes of India asking for recognition of their CoWIN app. Now the UK gov have made such a totally one sided move that in actually impinges on the lives of millions of it's own citizens overseas. It's not just us thinking "WTF!!!", it's also the London hotel and hospitality industry who've been totally screwed over by this shortsighted move.

They are clearly deliberately deterring visitors. I would have been successfully deterred but for the fact my brother is getting married in Northumberland in September. I'd have hoped all would be sorted by then, but who knows...

Who knows indeed. I doubt the gov know.
We missed our nephew's previously postponed wedding in London last month due to the 30 ppl rule and 10 days quarantine in the UK and CH, then the Euros started

Agreed, this is the result of years of govts. being lambasted if everyone is not treated as absolute equals and everyone's civil rights must be respected and no-one must be disadvantaged.
However this is the very moment where they could make this differentiation and 'get away with it'.

The problem with expats is, they usually can not vote, so their opinion doesn't really carry any weight, as we can see from the frozen pensions issue for many people.

They took a lot of flak, and still are, about the Indians and the delta, even though the vast majority of the 'Indians' were UK residents or had been naturalised.
Can you imagine the outrage if they HAD stopped all 'immigration' as NZ and AUS did/tried to do?

There are some reports which suggest that this week's list update could see Switzerland added to the UK's Green list (as they meet the criteria)

I doubt it with 30,000+ new cases a day in the UK.

We'd be dropped like a hot potato back into amber given how quickly cases are rising.

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Has anyone recently returned to CH, Swiss from LHR?

I have a flight at 13:45, rather tight connection if I catch the train for which I am holding ticket…how are the check-in queues/security? Have a business class tkt which speeds things up but realistically with bags to check etc any up-to-date info how much time I should allow?

Yes last Sunday lunchtime took me 50 minutes to check in and get my boarding pass (which is even worse as I don't even carry luggage but still have to wait).

It's complete pot luck as to how many flights are hitting those same check-in desks at once though its been 20-30 mins other weeks.

Looks like the reports were wrong, only 4 new countries were added to the green list and Switzerland wasn't one.

Green list
  • Bulgaria
  • Hong Kong
  • Croatia (added to the Green watch list)
  • Taiwan (added to the Green watch list)

Green watch list means they are under review for potential addition.

Needless to say this is a total crock of s***e, Well done Shapps!

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

We need more voices like hers in parliament, challenging these arbitrary and often disastrous decisions e.g. the meteoric rise in the delta variant was in part due to Johnson's reticence to shutting down travel from India because he had a planned trip there to beat his brexit drum.

Quote:
Such a mismatch between the data and country travel status has drawn criticism. Yvette Cooper, chair of the Home Affairs Select Committee, told BBC Newsnight that 'we need a transparent system so that everyone can see what the data is, what the evidence is, what decisions are made on . So that we can say, for example, why the government didn't put India on the red list much sooner when it should have, but also to understand why it made the decision to put Portugal on the green list and then to remove Portugal from the green list.

"Otherwise we will end up with a summer to cut and changer, which will end up being chaotic for everyone, rather than having a clear and transparent way to make sound public health decisions.

Actually, many (probably most but I can't prove it) people who came from India will have been British residents and many will also be citizens.

What would you have done? Ban them from returning to their own homes? Its not like quarantine would have worked with large multigenerational families being the norm.

Have we not learnt that variants will get everywhere, and you cannot keep them out, short of going for zero covid. Even then Australia has clearly lost control of delta now, so Britain had no chance.

Thankfully Yvette will lose her seat shortly. Probably the next election. If Boris goes I was actually considering helping out on election day there.
