Actually, many (probably most but I can't prove it) people who came from India will have been British residents and many will also be citizens.

What would you have done? Ban them from returning to their own homes? Its not like quarantine would have worked with large multigenerational families being the norm.

Have we not learnt that variants will get everywhere, and you cannot keep them out, short of going for zero covid. Even then Australia has clearly lost control of delta now, so Britain had no chance.
Yes they probably were mostly Brits, but it was a risk they were willing to take travelling out there in the first place since all but essential travel was positively discouraged.

And then when the government finally got their act together, they gave them a matter of days to get back to blighty before being placed on the red list which further exacerbated the problem as flights and airports were packed. The outcome were >70 delta variant hotspots spread across the UK and the knee-jerk reaction of other countries closing their borders to us.

A staggered return with hotel quarantine would have been the correct approach. And to your last point, if the UK strategy is to just let all the variants wash over the community and reach herd immunity, then drop this stupid traffic light system and let us all go home to see our families.

They were relying heavily on medical staff from India to come over and staff the hospitals etc.
I think they deliberately held off until enough of them had entered the UK before imposing restrictions on travel from India.

They already had travel exemptions in place for nurses and doctors from red list countries. The NHS just had to provide hospital managed quarantine for their staff.

I suspect they wanted to bring their families as it was probably more than a 2 week contract, so there had to be a sweet deal.

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Rumors that the UK will start recognizing foreign vaccines for people traveling from Amber countries from after next week.

Bad news is that France looks like it will make it to a special list all of its own due to concerns over a variant. This means arrivals into the UK from France will still have to quarantine even if they’re fully vaccinated. If true this would effect people planning on driving and could impact people who wish to fly from Basel.

Where did you hear these rumours? I still fail to understand how they haven't accepted certificates from any other country already. I'm absolutely desperate to go visit my sick mum and to be honest it's pretty galling seeing other high profile people breaking restrictions without consequences. I'm really hoping that you're right and they will finally do something good next week, got flights booked for the first time in two years to go back and visit my mum in Northumberland.

I am subscribed to the UK Gov email updates. This is last night's, which now includes UK NHS vaxxed from France:

Update from GOV.UK for:
Entering England during coronavirus
Fully vaccinated arrivals from France to England must continue to quarantine

Page summary:
Anyone arriving from France to England must continue to quarantine for 10 days at home or in other accommodation, even if they are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Change made:
First published.

So frustrating that even if you transit France from Switzerland you have to quarantine but fine in the UK if you want to join the hundred of thousands at the British GP, Wembley, British open golf etc ........

It's a little bit more contrived than that. Anyone who is not a UK resident, even if they are double vaccinated, if their vaccine was not delivered by the NHS in the UK, they have to quarantine for 10 days upon arrival in the UK.

Last night's change applies to UK residents who are returning from France, despite France being on the UK's Amber list, thereby making it the only Amber list country where UK residents will have to quarantine upon their return to the UK.

Allegedly, it's in response to concerns about the Beta variant which currently accounts for approximately 10% of new cases in France. So...whilst it was absolutely fine for UK residents to export the Delta variant all over the place, just don't bring the Beta one back with you. Oh, the irony....

Delta is racing ahead and will squeeze Beta out of existence soon.
I read only 42% of the French adults are double jabbed.

Hope it works out for you! Know Otterburn well, we normally stay a bit further North (first town after the Cheviot Hills)

5 days with test to release, Boots do a walk-in quicker service (I hope, he says, sitting here on day 1 of quarantine in the UK , fully vaccinated (CH) - total utter waste of time and money. Thanks Boris, Greg and Matt..)

The discussion in the airport queue (Zürich, chaos at baggage drop, seemed completely overloaded, suprisingly..) was that the Swiss government might be removing the quarantine exception for fully vaccinated people travelling back from the UK..

Thatd seem pretty pointless. Delta is firmly here now. We are now very close to the uk being safer than Europe given the uk is peaking and less well vaccinated Europe is only starting its wave.

The obvious error in that "theory" is the change in rate of the curve of delta infections is versus the curve of the ongoing vaccination programme in the EU or CH, i.e. if you can flatten the first one then less impact from it if the second is constant or rising..

Plus, who on earth said that the number of cases is flattening in the UK?
