Travel To UK Requirements Covid

I wanted to start a new thread to understand what the rules in May 2021 are for travelling to the UK

I have read a few threads that have ended up in pages and moved towards queue length but I still remain unclear about the following:

1) If you want to travel to the UK is a PCR test required? Or can a swab test be used?

2) If a swab test can be used how much time in advance is required to take the test and where can it be taken in Zurich and what is the cost?

3) Is the test checked at the airport security or at the gate?

4) You have to book a day 2 and day 8 test still in the UK - What providers are cheap for that?

5) What forms need to be filled out for passenger locator form on arrival in the UK and is this required before you depart or on arrival?

6) When you leave the UK do you need a PCR or swab test to get back in Switzerland?

I used to travel each weekend and I have not been on a plane for a year now so appreciate any advice you might share

As usual check the gov.uk website for info

and the Swiss one

Also, rules for entering the UK are likely to change from the 17th May (or later, TBC) and will depend on where Switzerland is placed in the proposed "traffic light" system. Rumour is that CH will be "amber", along with most of Western Europe. I believe an announcement is expected on the 10th.

A PCR test normally is a swab test. The two normal tests are PCR or Antigen/Lateral flow - the lesser antigen test is fine for entry to the U.K. you can do it at Zürich airport.

Most transits require PCR within the first 24 hrs of the first flight. If you dont have a transit an antigen is fine to enter UK as of now.

2) If a swab test can be used how much time in advance is required to take the test and where can it be taken in Zurich and what is the cost? 72 hrs before arrival in UK. Zurich airport have two locations, around CHF 100.- a pop. I would take one just an hour before check in as the results are ready in max 30 min

3) Is the test checked at the airport security or at the gate? During check in,

4) You have to book a day 2 and day 8 test still in the UK - What providers are cheap for that? Check the gov.uk website. I booked one that costs GBP 210.

5) What forms need to be filled out for passenger locator form on arrival in the UK and is this required before you depart or on arrival? Passenger locator form on the gov.uk web site, within 48 hrs of arrival.

6) When you leave the UK do you need a PCR or swab test to get back in Switzerland? I would do a PCR valid within 24 hrs of arrival in CH. I heard that to enter CH you must have a PCR and if not you need to do one upon arrival

I used to travel each weekend and I have not been on a plane for a year now so appreciate any advice you might share
As above

In addition to the above, you will also have to fill in a form before you leave the UK, proving that you have an essential reason to leave the country. Returning home is considered an essential reason.

My daughter went to the UK last week and will return next week, so this is our experience.
1) antigen is OK
2) up to 72 hours in advance
3) both
4) dunno sorry, her father booked those
5) the form is on the UK government website and yes it must be
6) if you have a PCR test (up to 72 hours in advance) it is fine, if you only have an antigen (up to 24 hours in advance) you might be required to take another test on arrival (can also be a antigen).

1&2) the PCR test in zurich airport costs 150, takes 6 hours, and is saliva, the antigen costs 80, swab, and takes 40 minutes.

There is also an entry form for Switzerland, on the BAG website, again, needs to be done in advance.

There is still a 10 day quarantine in the UK, which can be shortened if you take another PCR test on day 5, you still need to take the day 8 one.

Holidays are illegal in the UK, but if you have a foreign residency permit you can leave to go to that country (court ordered parental visitation is another valid reason), you will need to fill in a leaving form on the gov.uk website to get onto the plane

God luck

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Day 2&8 tests need to be booked before departure due to needing codes for the UK Passenger locator form. Without this you won’t get a form and not be allowed entry. You might get checked at your quarantine location, my partner did. Also, some companies are cheaper than quoted above for the two tests, my partner used Assured testing at £159, they use DPD for delivery who are terrible. Her tests were delivered on day 5 & 10 cos of DPD delays. Even Halo for the test to release on day 5 arrived on day 6 meaning she was released on day 7! It’s all a s**t show and will only get worse! I wish you all the best of luck!!

Make sure the test result is in English, French or Spanish (friend had this problem and could not getting his boarding card from Swiss and had to rebook his flight for the next day....)

A lot of places only have the test results in German but he found a place in Stadelhofen that could do in several languages including English.

Actually at the Swiss side the test results are checked at the departure gate (weirdly boarding passes issued automatically this end) if you don't have to check-in any luggage.

At the UK side to return to Switzerland they're checked at check-in before issuing the boarding pass when they also check validity of Swiss residency for travel.

Apodoc and Amavita provide certificates in English without any problem as do the airport testing centres. Apodoc you have a tick box and just say you want the fit to fly certificate and which language and the antigen test is then free.

But you are correct - someone turned up with one in Cyrillic or similar and they made them call the place and get one in English emailed before they would let her board a few weeks ago. I don't actually think she managed to board in the end.

The Swiss gate staff also called somewhere for a passenger last week when I was travelling to help them explain to the test centre in German that they needed a test result in English and the test place then emailed the passenger while they waited and they boarded without an issue.

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Randox Day 2 and Day 8 tests cost £240 before 50% airline discounts i.e. £120 total.
You have to do a bit of Googling to get the discount code but many airlines have it on their sites. it changes quite often

also. you can book test to fly kit in the Uk and bring it here with you to Switzerland and take the test under video supervision and they will issue a fit to fly certificate back to the UK.
I think day 5 test to release test can not be self administered ???? but i may be wrong

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Current information based on my recent travels GVA LHR LHR GVA .

The day 2 and day 8 test are best posted early in a "priority" post box often outside the Post Office sorting office ... Some test companies have drop boxes too. you then get the results back fast end of next day!

I was tested for the "FIT TO FLY ' PCR certificate before flying here to Switzerland at 10AM at the Heathrow "drive through". (Ubers welcome ) test site for £80. it costs £60 at Gatwick. the company is called EXPRESS TEST ..... i got the results back the same day 1800h not bad ..... but best to go early in the day.
Whatever your booked time slot is it appears first come first served . . hence early birds get the fastest results . . . .

Re: May 2021 Travel To UK Requirements Covid

Does anyone know if all the rapid antigen tests offered in Switzerland meet this this requirement for entry to England?

Quote:

You must make sure that the test provider you choose can meet the standards for pre-departure testing.

The test must meet performance standards of ≥97% specificity, ≥80% sensitivity at viral loads above 100,000 copies/ml.

This could include tests such as:-
- a nucleic acid test, including a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test or derivative technologies, including loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) tests
- an antigen test, such as a test from a lateral flow device

It’s your responsibility to ensure the test meets the minimum standards for sensitivity, specificity and viral load details. You must check with your test provider that it meets those standards.

You may not be able to travel if the test does not meet these standards. It’s your responsibility to ensure you get the right test that meets the above requirements.
Source: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/coronavi...d#type-of-test

Every pharmacy/clinic seems to be offering free or nearly free antigen tests for travel now, with certificate, but I cannot see if they meet this requirement. Anyone had any experience?

I suppose the test sensitivity needs to be printed on the certificate.

No they've never queried any antigen test when I've travelled just a quick glance for a negative result on the paperwork.

Yes - I was wondering about that. I’m a bit reluctant to try and travel without it but can’t figure out if you get it.

So the sensitivity/specificity wasn’t printed on your paperwork?
