Zurich Saturday 15 May

Anyone have ideas on why there were SO many police kitted out in full riot gear on Saturday throughout Zurich city, but especially along the banks of the Sihlholzlistrasse? Coppers were armed to the teeth, and the police vans and trucks all had riot shields, and there were a couple of trucks that looked like they were fitted out with water cannons?

I for one didn't stop to ask at the time - it was ringing alarm bells from times I when I was living in London's east end, when West Ham & Millwall had games scheduled...!

That was the EF mod team preparing to quell unrest due to the implemention of the new infractions system.

Re: Zurich Saturday 15 May

There were covidiot rallies planned all around Switzerland on Saturday.

50,000 were expected in Bern and the police did the same here and kept them away. I tipped my cap to them as I cycled on by.

Ah yes, I did receive an email from the US consulate warning of a protest regarding policy in Cuba in Zurich last weekend. Sorry about that - there was also covid protests planned, but I bet that is what you saw.

Re: Zurich Saturday 15 May

On Saturday there was a pro Palestine rally on one the bridges across the Limmat. The police in their full gear (those wire cages around their cars were something to behold, right?) effectively blocked the car traffic across several bridges without any signage or traffic detour, so if you drove from the Bahnhofstrasse toward the Limmatquai you were stuck for I don't know how long.

The protest was peaceful.

ROFL!!!!!! As almost ex-(ball & strife) from a West Ham supporter (aka Hooligan), let me tell you that last weekend's tour-de-force of the police was pretty mild, compared to my recollections pre- & post- soccer game....

Tear-gas and rubber bullets would be a good start!
