How do you guys find your picking spots?

I tried using the SwissFungi map and going to a forest that had a few Porcini reports in the past couple of years, but the forest "near" the bus station was on steep hills, which made it difficult to cover a lot of ground and I only found inedible mushrooms.

To me these are clear sign that you were second, someone already got there and collected the good ones .

Was the bus station a post bus-station close to Zürich?

Mushrooms spots are usually difficult to reach (i.e. steep hills, some distance from paths). But given the sheer amount of people living in Zürich, I would say that if you want to have a reasonable chance of collecting Porcini you should go to Einsiedeln or to the Black Forest, both at 1h distance from Züri.

Dyed-in-the-wool mushroomers rarely share their favorite picking sites; good locations are secrets handed down from one generation to the next, guarded with one's life.

Well, almost.

Since I'm a not a good mushroomer, I'll share mine:

Head up the Rossberg, along the crest from Schindellegi to Einsiedeln. Lots of patches, just scan the usual terrain.

OH used to regularly bring home a decent haul while out walking, but it turns out it wasn't his skill, rather our much-missed Hooligan, Mushroom Hound Extraordinaire. She had a nose that couldn't be beat. Since the sad day she left for canine Valhalla, pickings have been markedly slimmer, OH's heart just isn't in it anymore. He still regularly sees folks with full baskets out that way, though.

I tried near Hütten, which isn't very far from Zurich, but I don't think that me getting there second was the issue.

Fixed that for you. Though wild boar sold commercially still need to have levels checked, highly radioactivity is somewhat exaggerated.
