| | Good cakes in Zurich other than Sprüngli...
Hi,
I need to buy a cake for a birthday event... spontaneously, so not going to book it weeks in advance. What cake shops can you recommend other than Sprüngli (which is great, but we had it too often...)
Cheers...

Personally, I always liked Migros cakes, especially their Schwarzwälder and Strawberry tortes.

I just had Migros Erdbeertörtli, a colleague brought it for us, some kind of small pie with Crème pâtissière and strawberries.
i do not recommend it, I ate it just from the respect of the colleague, but on the others side, tastes differ.
I guess you should tell where you are, so you can get local recommendations. For Luzern, people are praising Bebié Konditorei Confiserie, but for me their cakes are way to sweet and dry.

Honold has really nice ones as well. Bit less well known. The biggest store in town is the one at Rennweg but they also have a small one next to Bahnhof Enge vis a vis Sprüngli and Mc Donalds. Or at the Bahnhof Stadelhofen and others

any local bakery has (at least good looking) cakes. I ve seen some at Hug, Boden, Kunz, Mosers etc. There is a large bakery on Schaffhauserplatz which also offers vegan options.
Confiserie St. Jakob, Honold, Teuscher etc probably also all have good ones. The prices would almost demand this |

Thanks for all the tips! I went to two bakeries and didn’t like what I saw... so made a cake myself this morning.

Will I seem completely weird if I say I never liked those bakery birthday cakes?
I eat only out of politeness.
I know bakeries that are totally, mega- super- OK. None of them is in CH though. The land of excellent chocolate and pralines etc.
One cannot have all, I guess.

Check out “A Perky Kitchen” on Facebook. The owner is a personal friend. I imagine she would do something bespoke for you.

I can‘t bake for the life of me, but the Sprungli stuff is somehow always disappointing. Have ordered from other great bakeries / confiseries over the years, which have been better - like Hausamanns or Honolds. But they are so rich in taste - I‘d also rather find another provider. Anyway, I don‘t really think that kids at a party think about it - the most important thing is the event! If it‘s for adults, my experience is that a good wine will compensate for my lack of baking skills.

| | | | | Not weird at all. I don't like them either. Homemade cake is the best.
Anything I've ever bought at a bakery here in CH has seemed like it's days old and/or is usually rather tasteless. Maybe it's better in the French part of CH.

Lots of people in my parts enjoy the infamous Muotathaler Rahmkirschtorte. It's basically layers of white cake filled with whipped cream, sugar and kirsch. Freeze it and serve it while thawing.... scrumptious!
