I've read before that one way to keep wasps away is to hang a paper bag (or something) that looks like a wasp's nest because wasps will avoid that area if they think there is already a hive there. I have no idea if that works, though -- I've never tried it.

But I do know that they're attracted to reflections. I wear glasses and they love to get in my face because of it.

Apparently, they don't like the smell of peppermint (or any type of mint), so if we go out to the pool or for a picnic, etc., I'll take a little travel-sized spray bottle full of water mixed with peppermint oil and spray it around to try to keep them away.

yes and no for me, usually you are not eating directly in the smoke.

Really if there are no nests nearby, they usually appear only in august at my place of origin, and never where I live now.

If you kill them within the first 2 that show up to the banquet, it's usually the end of it anyway. If you wait until they're 4 you're screwed.
